Al Agnew Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 With the demise of Royalex, solo canoe choices got a lot more limited. If you could find a used Royalex Wenonah Vagabond you'd have as good an Ozark stream fishing craft as you can get. If you could find a used Old Town Pack it would be quite serviceable...and a used Mohawk Solo 14 would be considerably better. The new solos are made out of heavier materials, but there is still a big difference between 50-55 pounds for a canoe that is easy to portage because the gunwales are good handles and the seat rests on your shoulders, and a kayak or Nucanoe type thing that probably weighs more (sometimes a lot more) and doesn't have the convenient ways for one person to carry it. But in my opinion, if your solo fishing craft weighs more than 45 pounds or so you've negated a lot of the advantages of owning one. I wouldn't go so far as to call the OT Disco and Guide "crap", as Smalliebigs did. They are serviceable as is, and can be improved with seat placement and modification. OT's new boat, the Next, hasn't been out long enough to get many reviews, but it might turn out to be a decent platform, although crowding the limits of weight I mentioned above. Ozark anglers seldom even consider the composites and glass canoes, but that's where some of the best choices in paddling canoes can be found these days. The material is noisier and scratches easily, but it's easy to repair and unless you're on a river with heavy rapids with lots of big rocks, it's durable enough. But the better models of these canoes are probably outside your price range. If you want to paddle a solo canoe upstream, just get a take-apart double bladed paddle for doing so, while using your single blade for everything else. I guarantee you'll go up the river just as easily with the canoe as with a kayak of similar configuration. In short, it's hard to really recommend the "perfect" solo canoe these days, because you'll only find it as a used canoe. If you find ANY solo Royalex boat for sale at a price you can afford, you better consider it.
Guest Posted March 24, 2015 Posted March 24, 2015 The price of used buffalo canoes just when thru the roof. This guy is asking $1,000 for a USED buffalo.. wth? http://fayar.craigslist.org/boa/4944286992.html
ness Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Here's a guy asking $950 for a used Wenonah Solo Plus. That's a pretty nice boat that can do a lot. I've had one for years and it was great for taking a couple kids out for a spin on the local lakes. Took them down the Niangua with it too. Used it primarily solo more recently. I've been looking around for a used Vagabond and finally found a very lightly used one in Iowa. Did a road trip over the weekend, stuffed my gullet at Maid Rite, and brought her home. Paid $850. John
gramps50 Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 Not really sure what makes a canoe solo but this one is made with Royale as AL mentioned not a Wenonah but sounds like a good deal. www.kcpaddler.com/inc/sdetail/785/116 it's a Nexus (Bell Canoe Works)
ollie Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Thanks for the link gramps50! I saw 2 on there I wouldn't mind having. I will drop them a message today. If you can handle that color that is. Wow is that thing green.
ollie Posted March 25, 2015 Author Posted March 25, 2015 Yeah, I saw that one on craigslist the other day. Too much money for me. I'll keep looking around. That KC paddler had a couple I wouldn't mind having, but it looks like they are going out of business? I emailed them so I guess I will see. Terrierman Posted March 25, 2015 Posted March 25, 2015 You would not be happy in a Buffalo anyway if you are wanting a solo boat. They're a lot more geared to tandem and will handle some pretty heavy water very well. They were/are tough sons of guns.
