That the tentative plan. I fish the Grand Lake Anglers for Christ tournaments on Grand and there's one this Saturday. It's kinda up in the air now but still the plan.

I quite fishing tournaments many moons ago and one of the main reasons I haven't started back is church. I wish there was a "Fishing for Christ" type league/club down here. Just too far to drive to the Grand Lake area, maybe I'll search around some!!

I have a single eight footer and wish I had another. So far I've used the heck out of the thing, even on table rock. I'm already angling to the wife for two twelves. If I push two twelves long enough buying another eight won't seem so bad.

do you recommend buying the first one now and waiting to buy the second, or waiting and buying both at the same time?

Since your granddaughter is only 2 1/2 it'll be easy to keep her entertained and get her started right fishing. We've got three grown daughters and six grandkids, and they were all that age once and learning to fish!

When they were that little I'd start them out with a cane pole, mono line 2' less than the length of the pole, and about a #1 light-wire, straight Eagle Claw gold hook, no sinker. (The light long-shank hook is for easier unhooking of panfish.) Cover the hook with a piece of nightcrawler and teach the kid to just swing it out and drop the bait along chunk-rock banks, brush, docks, etc. Lower the tip of the pole and let slack line float on the water so the bait falls naturally. Watch that floating mono line - when it twitches, then starts getting pulled down, raise the pole straight up to set the hook. They'll get a fish most EVERY time that way, mostly little sun perch or black perch but once in awhile something that'll give 'em a tussle like a keeper bluegill, black perch, or even a good catfish.

In my experience, as long as something is constantly going on and they're catching fish, kids stay entertained and enthusiastic and they don't get bored. Come to think of it, I'm kinda the same way.

I started both my kids at about 2, my son was 5 when he caught his first rainbow on a flyrod. You're absolutely right, you need to keep them entertained. I plan on wearing the back of the coves out with a cork and a worm. One saving grace, she is a daredevil and enjoys 'driving' the boat as fast as she can....so if push comes to shove we can just drive around between short fishing spurts until we find some fish.... thanks and congrats on the grandkids, I never knew what my dad and father-in-law meant about grandkidlets until I had a couple.....

Good man right there. I quit fishing Sunday tournaments for that exact reason. Nobody else is going to teach my boys the right order of priorities.

I will say if Grand is to far you need to move. Unless you're close enough to Texas lakes, but still. If you have Facebook check out the GLAFC. Great great series. 100% payback, they feed you, they preach the gospel before every tournament. It's quite a deal.

As far as the talons always get two if you can and get 12's if you can. The outside dimensions are almost the same as my eights which is really cool. A single one is great but two would just be awesome. I know it's a big pill to swallow but you won't regret it. They'll come in handy for so many situations that you don't even think of. It has allowed me to expand the use of my boat.

I hope you have side imaging graphs so I don't have to poison your mind over those too.

Thanks, that's pretty much my thought process too on the Talons, so I don't get to retire for an additional 3 months, my wife is balking at my retirement anyway (under-foot sorta thing I think). I also had an issue with being called a cheater when it was simply I was better fisherman than they were. They couldn't stand a snot-nosed 20 something kicking their butts every week. I will check GLAFC out but I don't need to move close to Grand to fish great lakes, I can fish Arbuckle after work, 1/2 dozen 50# stringers last two years, Ray Roberts, Lake Fork, and live on some local lakes that aren't known as well lately but have produced 3 of the last 10 state record largemouths. I'm good there for now.

oh and I've got 3 side imaging units on my boat and one in the garage, I'm already a believer in that respect ;)

Is anyone else reading this and hearing the voices in your head say "that is what she said?"

I got hooked up on baits. I caught several fish on zara sppok late yesterday, one in the 5 lb class. Started to fish this morning but weather deterred my granddaughter and she was up so watched cartoons instead
