You're right, of course. It just rankles me that a vocal subset of locals in the area are dead set against things like closing these obscure roads and trails, and justify it by saying that their families use them and that they are better stewards of the land and water than any outsiders. And then you see stuff like this, which is most likely NOT done by outsiders. Those people are already not on the same side that we are, as far as I'm concerned. If they were, they'd be willing to work with the park service and the LAD people, and not oppose every little thing they try to do.

I will say that the better description than hillbilly is white trash. There are white trash at every level of income and education. Some of the most protective landowners are hillbillirs, some of the most destructive are wealthy and educated who bough some property to play on and aren't really concerned with any damage done to the resource as long as they have their piece of the pie.

fair enough. Hillbillies is an endearing term to some. Like Hoosier is to people from indiana.

I agree with you within the scope you're talking about. When someone says that they want roads eroding everything in the ONSR and justify that by saying that they are good stewards of the land, well, that's too easy to pick apart to even be fun. I just think in a larger sense, the "locals vs. outsiders" debate is really dumb and unproductive. There are locals in that area that have seen enough pillaging of the land to know something needs to change. There are others that are maybe ignorant of some of the facts that can be brought around. I've seen that done by those more tactful than myself. I don't think alienating them is a viable strategy.

I'm only making a point of this, because sometimes it starts to feel like "city boy vs hillbilly" becomes the primary roadblock to anything getting done. We get so caught up in it that we end up talking to caricatures rather than having actual conversations.

Anyway, enough being mad for today. Time to find some smallies somewhere in Central Missouri that are willing to work with me.

Plenty of graffiti on the highway bluffs on 72 headed west of Fredericktown today. None worthy of petroglyph status our a repaint like the Piassa Bird. Tiss human nature to make a mark.

Btw, they caught the vandal who defaced one of the bluffs on the Jacks. 300 fine and $4,000 in clean up costs. Figure that's as good as we could get. Folks don't go to jail for most stuff.

Take a few illegal rider's ATV's and that problem will stop. Social media will spread the word and if you know you are risking your ATV you probably won't risk it. Won't happen, but would be nice.

You could argue that isn't enough of a penalty for defacing a place like that and the challenging (possibly dangerous) work that will go into restoring it....but dang, I'm glad to that there was SOMETHING done. and whether or not it's commensurate with the damage caused, it's definitely big enough to make someone think pretty hard.

Usually crimes of that nature in remote areas are destined to go unsolved. Kudos to law enforcement/whoever provided the information to actually get something done with that.

But if someone gets caught with a little devil weed they get locked up real quick.
