A crucial call for sure. I played a lot of pickup ball back in the day, but never for money. I could see where things could get heated if there is money on the line.

Sorry- just kidding.

I've played with this group for about 6 years. I don't play to win- I go because of the guys who play. They're top notch - and we do play to sweat mostly. Ages range from high schoolers to my age but the guys who consistently come are mostly age 30-40.

As in most competitive sports, there are disagreements. I'd just never heard of this interpretation.

Gotta agree with Joe somewhat. Short of simply carrying the ball around who calls travelling in a fun game with no refs.

Nice explanations of traveling. Another tricky one to call is the jump step. Technically, for it to be legal, you have to leave your feet (both feet) BEFORE you pick up your dribble...ball has to be coming up but not yet in your hand when your feet leave the floor. That way, you haven't established a pivot foot until you come down from the jump. Then you can jump again to shoot, or even move your non-pivot foot. But if the ball is already in your hand as you make the first jump, you've already established a pivot foot, and when both feet come down again you've traveled. Talk about something difficult to see and call, though...I think most of the time, refs will simply call it if it looks funny.

One thing I think refs call too much is traveling when the guy is holding the ball before dribbling, fakes one way and goes the other. It's almost automatic. But say you're faking to the right. Your feet are both on the floor. You haven't established which one is the pivot foot, hopefully. You move your right foot to sell the fake, which establishes your stationary left foot as your pivot foot, then plant on the right foot and move left, which is when you lift the left foot. The ball just has to leave your hand to start the dribble before your left foot comes down again, right?

This thread has given me flashback nightmares to that winter I was so desperate for money to feed my young family I refereed men's rec league basketball. I have never before or since felt such fear for my safety.

Not sure I agree with the interpretation. What happens if you take your step and a half to go up for a layup and someone jumps to block your shot and you drop the ball of to your teammate? Is that a travel because you didn't shoot? Or you shoot an air ball that turns into a pass does it get called a travel because your shot turned into a pass?

Very good point... I'll have to point that out to the guys next Monday morning.
