Was commenting on something just a bit ago, and got an idea on this topic since there's a lake in St. Louis County that I frequently visit with a lot other features about it that I really like, but with the worst history of fishing success for me personally. I'm talking about Unger Lake. Caught a grand total of 2 fish. One good sized White Crappie, and one decent Grass Carp. As well as 2 or 3 turtles. This in so many fishing trips that I've lost count. Most of it fishing from shore, but once or twice I also tried the kayak with no success. So that's mine so far. Won't give up on it completely though. Maybe it changes for the better with these recent high water events on the Meramec by it.

Last week I checked out a very small creek (headwaters of a stream that is barely floatable on downstream) that I hadn't been to in probably 25 years; it's just far enough away that, being a wading size creek, there was no big reason for me to fish it often when there were closer creeks. It happns to be within an MDC state forest, so access is easy, but back then it was obvious that few people thought about fishing it. It's just too small. But I discovered back then that the scattered nice pools had a lot of decent smallmouth, up to 16 inches. There would be at least one or two 15-16 inchers in each pool, even though you might have to walk several hundred yards between pools. I had hiked and waded a good three miles up from the access back then, and caught a bunch of fish that acted like they had never seen a lure.

So last week, it was on the way to somewhere else I was going, so I stopped and tried it.

There was almost no water over a foot deep. Even when you would come to what looked like a nice pool, it would be only inches deep and with very little cover. I saw a few 4-6 inch smallies and caught three of them. I saw NOTHING bigger than that.

So...it might be the worst spot I've fished in a long time, even though it was once pretty nice.

Meramec Spring trout park. I have had some of my worst experiences fishing there. Rude people, crowded, and other things. The worst was when I stopped in for an afternoon of fishing, paid entry fee and bought a tag. Go down to stream and there was a jon boat puttering around cutting moss. Went back and asked for refund. I have drove by many times since and never stopped.

Cold and nasty days during the catch and release season are the best. You have the park yourself and the fish always bite well on those type of days. Catch and keep season isn't always bad either. In fact, I can't think of anytime where it was that bad other than opening day. Even on the opener, there are so many fosh that you can find water that aint crowded and holding plenty of fish. I was down last Sunday between 2-4:30. There was just a few folks in the same area as me and it was loaded with fish. We caught around 20 fish in just a couple of hours.

Why would you want a refund if they were cutting moss in one spot? There are decent holes all throughout the park.

My worst spot is the Gasconade down close to the Missouri. I've never caught much down there. It gets trot lined so hard that I think a lot of the nice catfish get cleaned out. It could just be that I suck at catfishing too.

For me, the worst spot is setting in the boat, behind the garage and not enough time to actually go fishing. A bad day fishing beats a great day at work.

Powerton Lake in Illinois, a cooling lake . It's either feast or famine with very little feasting . Strange thing is I do reasonably well on other cooling lakes I've fished.

what a long strange trip it's been , put a dip in your hip, a glide in your stride and come on to the mother ship , the learning never ends

First off, great topic for discussion...

My worst fishing spot as of late is the white river between Lake Sequoyah and Beaver during the white bass run. It may not be that the fishing has gotten that bad, but I dislike "battle fishing" where you have to volley for position and people try to push you out of a hole, etc.

I remember as little as 5 years ago when you could pull up to the parking lot/ramp at 7:30, launch a boat and go pretty much where you wanted to, catch a 100 white bass in a few hours, and go home. Now, if you don't hit the lot at 6:15, you won't find a spot, the ramp is always crowded, there are 50+ people lining the banks at the turn that is 75 yards down from the ramp, there are people standing and wading in every shoal from Walker's Bluff up to the Walleye Hole...which, how does everyone now know about the Walleye Hole when we used to putt up there, anchor, catch a limit, and leave without ever seeing another boat...

This year, I went out a few times, battled it out with other boats (one time in Long Hole, just up from the ramp above the first shoal, I counted 15 boats), and caught maybe 30 white bass total across multiple trips...Used to, if you didn't catch 30 in an hour and a half, it was a slow bite.

I've never been to a bad fishing spot. Some have just been better than others.

Duh... this is the internet... 3 billion viewers and growing. To post locations and expect the place not to be over run is what's hard to fathom.

I can't dance like I used to.
