dtrs5kprs Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 I wish he would not mention the secret color on a public forum. Now everyone will be throwing it. I'm pretty sure Champ is using a custom rope bait, jointed so it will leave a V wake. Probably painted smokey joe by Hughesy. I know nothing of this grape ape color... Champ188 1
Champ188 Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Yeah, shoulda kept my big piehole shut. Now the knifers will take our top secret rope intel and go after the gar. Before long, we won't have anything left to fish for.
5bites Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 If I knew how to clean them I'd like to arrow a few. That's a lot of freezer bag swimming around in one fish. I've heard they are very good cleaned by someone that knows what they're doing. Btw we set down on a big school of them Friday at grand. My son am was amazed as they porpoised around the boat. He grabbed his redfin and started casting. No idea why he had a redfin. I said boy if one of them takes a notion to eat that you've just lost that redfin. I wish he would have though. I've hooked them cranking on grand before and the power is amazing. It basically felt like the bottom of the lake moving and there just wasn't much you was gonna do about the direction he wanted to go. I lost one of my cherished strike king series 3 lake fork specials this way.
MOPanfisher Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Use a pair of tin snips on their skin then peel off with pliers. The meat is a beautiful white, can be cooked many ways than. A buddy in college used to make a sort of fish chowder with the pieces of gar meat, fresh and hot it was delicious, cold they were like rubber. 5bites 1
5bites Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Do you just fillet it out after you peel it? How are the bones? I'm a big fried fish guy.
MOPanfisher Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Once you get the hide off just use a fillet knife to remove the tenderloin/back strap piece. Two boneless pieces of beautiful meat. I would cut the straps into bite sized pieces and roll them in a good spicy Cajun style mix and into the deep fryer, or try it in a zatarains type crab boil and see which was better. 5bites Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 If I get one to the boat and feel ambitious I will try it. I hope I like it because it obviously flys under the radar. Where to keep one if I get it will be the biggest issue. Bass boats aren't exactly geared for gar.
*T* Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 Triple-secret gar bait is the Ned PBJ A-rig rope bait with 1/100 oz. heads. They will take it rather gently so be on guard. Actually, did have one on silver grub last October near Piney. Came straight to boat then blasted away other direction. Drag could not keep up. Maybe 6 - 7 pounds. Let it keep my bait. 5bites Posted July 29, 2015 Posted July 29, 2015 May have to go all swap people on them and just shoot the darn things when they get close enough to the boat on the retrieve.
