5bites Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 Was curious, especially from the gurus, what exact line do you use when dragging jigs at Table Rock? Type, poundage, diameter, etc. If you have input on other dragging baits (tube, finesse jig, c-rig) by all means feel free to add it but please be specific about the exact line details.
Fishin Hodge Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 12 lb test fluro of your choice. Right now you could use 20 with the color we have, but I'd say 12 lb test fluro is the most popular. The brands vary between angler, but if you like a specific brand it will work just fine IMO.
merc1997 Bo Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 i will be the odd many out on this one, but i use braid. braid works for me, and the hook set is much better because there is not any stretch. and, when you are putting a hook up through the top of their head, the no-stretch is a plus. bo
Dutch Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 At night Pline hi vis 10# is what I have always used dragging in open water. Daytime I don't usually drag.
GNSfishing Posted August 24, 2015 Posted August 24, 2015 I also use 30 lb braid and tie a 6ft 15lb fluorocarbon leader to the braid. Love the no stretch properties of braided line, I use long casts which is possible with using braided line without the hard hook setting of other lines due to the amount of stretch that's in mono and fluorocarbon line. You must check the fluorocarbon line for fraying often while dragging your lure through the rocky bottom. magicwormman and Squirrel Fishin' 2
5bites Posted August 24, 2015 Author Posted August 24, 2015 Pound rating is what I'm wanting to get away from in the discussion. It's a almost useless statistic if you compare diameters and poundage between brands.
rps Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 OK. So my answer depends on knowing some background. I typically carry a topwater rod, a crank bait rod suitable for flicker shads through rock crawlers, a jig and spoon jig rod, and a Ned rod. Oh, and of course my two walleye troll and worm harness rods. I rarely fish anywhere other than the Rock. With that in mind, I choose line for multiple applications on a day in and day out basis. That means I put 6# line on the Ned rod. I put 8# on the crank bait rod. I run 10/2 metered braid on the walleye rods. I put 10# line on the top water, and I use 12# on the jig and jig spoon rod. If I try to drop shot, I use the crank bait rod. If I throw a large wake bait or swim bait, I use the jig rod. If I want to drag a C-rig, the rod I use depends on the weight. Except for the walleye rods, I have found YoZuri clear or lo-vis green holds my knots well, stands up to abrasion, and has an acceptable diameter. I cannot say the same of any fluorocarbon or of any straight mono. The bonus is the unexpectedly low cost. I suggest anyone who is serious about line versus line comparisons should go to tackletour's web site and read their articles on line and on knot strength. I promise those articles will explode the commonly held beliefs. magicwormman 1
Mitch f Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 X2 on the Yozuri as far as braid goes...I haven't figured out the secret to make it work all day on a casting reel without issues, I'm sure some have. That's why I just go with Yozuri on everything but topwater. As far as the no stretch goes, I want a little stretch. I'm not fishing heavy weeds usually, or frogs in Lilly pads. Something's gotta give, or you might straighten a hook or tear it out of the fishes mouth. "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
Champ188 Posted August 25, 2015 Posted August 25, 2015 5bites, for dragging a football jig, hula grub or Carolina rig, Donna and I always use 15-pound fluorocarbon, either Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon or Cabela's No-Vis 100% Fluorocarbon. I am 98% convinced at this point that the Cabela's line is every bit as good (and sensitive) as the Trilene for half the price. abkeenan and magicwormman 2
Members austin14 Posted August 25, 2015 Members Posted August 25, 2015 I use 20lb sunline fluro or 15 spiderwire fluro with a 3/8 or 1/2 oz football.
