Thing is, people respond to this type of "independence."  Their disregard for societal laws and modes of behavior are seen to many as a pure form of American spirit, gumption, and self sufficiency. They are unsullied by modern America, and a certain subset of our misguided populace is charmed by their roguish and anti government behaviors. They are unfortunately portrayed as protectors of a by gone "simpler" time, worshiped by people who crave outhouses, bigotry, and violence.

Thanks for the info on the regulations, honestly I had no idea. I am not here to judge, if they took them legally then so be it.

I have to admit, not sure if I could stomach those the way they look.

When I first started fishing for smallies, I was as ignorant as they come about them. Hell, I was ignorant about the regulations.

Until one day I showed a picture to a friend of mine of me holding up a stringer of smallies.  He did not think it was as cool as me, matter of fact it was illegal. I just did not know-  I am not saying that made it right but I did not take the time to know the laws.

That was 15 years ago and I have not kept a smallie since then. I guess what I am trying to say, is that sometimes getting a little education can change behavior- certainly in my case it did. I just wished it always did, but that is a pipe dream and I understand that.

I did send that guy a private message just informing him of the regulations and not accusing him of anything. Guess I will never know, but if he is taking them illegal maybe he will stop.

Most folks are miguided by their own volition. Your belief in something does not make it true. I believe so it must be true. You can't win with that argument in terms of logic, but that is the best that most come up with. Sad really. Always question!

By societal influences: family, friends, media, that embrace the notion of a virtuous "outlaw," unencumbered by the rule of law. It is a favorite Hollywood trope that many take as gospel. This misanthropy is often glossed over and portrayed as "fierce independence."

In other words, they are paying attention to the wrong things. Why do you think in 2015, in Missouri,, or Arkansas for that matter, there is still an anti education, anti government anti social view of life in many rural communities?  Yet, generation after generation, they remain poor and under educated, with little hope of being productive or decent members of society. They are misguided by the idea of "lawlessness" as a desirable way of life

Misguided. Good lovin' gone bad.

Whatever. Never mind. We're stupid and contagious.

Somewhere between the age of 38-41 I began realizing that most everything I had been taught, or had pounded into my head all my life, was total bullshit.   I'm a way different dude now.  Not necessarily better....just different.

Now at 52 I am beginning to realize that most people (including myself???) might be better off (happier) living in that old dream world.

How does one get back there ?

Been eaten up and tossed to the curb before, and looking back I can say that the pain was bearable if blended with a good sense of humor.

Someone once said:  If you ever feel as if nobody cares about you, just miss a few payments.      Truer words have never been spoken.  There are people out there that care ALOT.  :D

What was this thread about?   Oh yeah, Smallies.....Stop eating them !
