Quillback Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I did not know this, but it looks as if we have fresh water jellyfish in many of the lakes in this region. They are an invasive (from China), but fortunately appear to be harmless. USGS map shows them being in Beaver, Taney, and Bull Shoals, you'd think in that case they would also be in Table Rock. http://www.bellavistapoa.com/newsmanager/templates/template.asp?articleid=5290&zoneid=7
Members Flyfsh Posted September 29, 2015 Members Posted September 29, 2015 I have seen them years ago in Lake Murray near Ardmore OK. Jim
Ranger520vx Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I have seen them in Pomme De Terre for over 20 years.
Troutnut69 Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 They are definitely in Table Rock (have seen lots while diving) and just about every other lake around. We even have them in muddy Kansas lakes.
aarchdale@coresleep.com Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I have a video of one i will try to dig up from table rock
Kelroy Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I first saw them in Table Rock during the MO BASS state tournament a few years ago. The boater I drew out with was a local who had been fishing there for decades, and told me he had never even noticed them before. When I commented that we were passing through a school of jellyfish, he thought I was kidding. At the next year's state tournament, I also saw them in LOZ, and by coincidence, I had drawn out with the same boater. It seems they tend to hang near the surface this time of year.
Johnsfolly Posted September 29, 2015 Posted September 29, 2015 I wonder what effect they may have on the plankton communities in those lake systems. I haven't heard much about them like I have for other invasives, Quagga and zebra mussels, Bythotrephes sp., etc., that do adversely affect the biological communities.
Moswimb8slinger Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 My first encounter with them was lake leatherwood outside of Eureka Springs. Fishing at night, i saw them when I shined the water with my head light. My brother apparently had seen them diving in Table Rock (he worked with the state park marina for a few years)
J-Doc Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 Odd that everyone else has seen them because I have never seen or heard of these before. Need marine repair? Send our own forum friend "fishinwrench" a message. He will treat you like family!!! I owe fishinwrench a lot of thanks. He has been a great mechanic with lots of patience!
Terrierman Posted September 30, 2015 Posted September 30, 2015 http://archive.constantcontact.com/fs177/1102224436468/archive/1122256207945.html This is an article about freshwater jellyfish. And for what it's worth, that newsletter is consistently good and very informative on a wide range of water and water quality related topics. Proud to say a good friend puts it out.
