Members justfishing Posted October 15, 2015 Members Posted October 15, 2015 Okay guy's I posted last week about bass fishing on this lake and got one reply to the post and I thank that person for the reply, had several views. Beginning to think not much bass fishing going on this lake not sure if not good for bass and just good for Muskie and Crappy . Just looking for info for the lake and what the bass are doing. Coming up this weekend. Also what you all think this cold front is going to do to the fishing?
Riverwhy Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 I think the cold front and the ENE winds are going to make fishing very tough this weekend. I'm not sure whether small and slow is the answer or perhaps a reaction bite from a lipless might do better.
Flysmallie Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 I don't think that we have a bunch of members that fish that lake. But it is a good bass fishing lake. Better for bass than musky and crappie. And if I had to choose only one lake to bass fish in the state of Missouri then this would be the one. I don't get on it like I used to so I don't have any report for you but I promise you it's a good lake.
fishinwrench Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 PDT fishes great in the Winter and Spring. It's pretty tough in the Summer, and I don't think I've ever fished it in the Fall. Looking through my old journals I see that back in '96 I won a little club tourney there in mid- Sept. with a whoppin' 9lbs. Those 13 inchers were caught on the ledge in the take-off cove within sight of my truck. . 5" Yamamoto hula grub.
Members justfishing Posted October 15, 2015 Author Members Posted October 15, 2015 I thank you guys for your input. Riverwhy that is my biggest concerns, but I guess on the lake is better than being at home. Flysmallie thanks for that input. Need to get them lines wet again Sir. Fishinwrench It's nice to have them old journals to look back and if my memory is correct that is when the hula grubs were the thing, It's kinda funny you talk about grubs I was going threw all my tackle and found a old plano box that is full of old grubs and heads, I haven't use them in years , Maybe i need to put them back into boat and give them a try. Thank again guy's. I will post next week on what I found this weekend
Jerry Rapp Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 fish do not bite hula grubs anymore, or even hula poppers. Please dispose of the hula grubs properly, or send them to me for proper disposal.
fishinwrench Posted October 15, 2015 Posted October 15, 2015 Back then it HAD TO BE a Yamamoto. And if you loaded them into your box wrong you'd ruin them. They were expensive pieces of crap but they DID catch fish. I'm all non-garlic Chompers now.
grizwilson Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 The silly green fish have been wearing me out in the edge of pockets in pole timber. They seem to prefer black/chartreuse crappie magnet on a road runner head. Think 10 bass to 1 crappie. Members Phillip Catron Posted October 16, 2015 Members Posted October 16, 2015 I fished a club tournament down there last weekend and it was TOUGH again. Water temp - 69-72 (depending on clarity). We found a majority of our bass came off of either a texas rigged trick worm or a shakey head with a trick worm. This technique worked a couple weeks before during another tournament when we had the super blood moon so I figured not much would change. First thing in the morning we would hit a main lake channel swing point where it transitioned from bluff wall to shallow water ie. a cut, pocket, or cove. Throughout the morning we mainly followed the shad but as soon as they left the bite was gone. In the afternoon we fished inside the coves and searched for large concentrations of bait fish and primarily fished the same lure as before or switched to a grub and hopped it across the bottom. As far as the depths we caught them?...Well that too wasn't completely nailed down as we were catching them from anywhere between a few feet of water to 20+ feet. My partner and I worked over any bank we fished. We sometimes fished it 3-4 times making sure whatever was down there had an equal opportunity to take a ride in a bass cat. This worked to our benefit as we ended up hooking three decent 3+ lb bass. That is all the info from last weekend and it appears that this weekend is going to be similar.
Flysmallie Posted October 16, 2015 Posted October 16, 2015 I think most have a tendency to fish this lake too deep. Yes you can have some success doing that. But these fish seem to like the shallow water better, even in the heat of the summer. In the fall I'm probably not fishing anything deeper than 10 feet with a buzzbait, spinnerbait and crankbait. You can drag the depths and find some fish, but I would rather cover some water and burn up those 3 lures looking for better fish. The area around Bolivar landing would be my first choice and the area around Wheatland would be my second choice. No reason to go any place else.
