moodyfour Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 Well it has been an up and down season so far. Opening day comes with all the excitement of the new season and the weather was tremendous for the first time in a long time. Completely whiffed on descent buck about 8:30. Should not have missed, but I did. Saw another good one at 11, but he stayed in the brush and never presented a good shot. Didn't see much Sunday Morning and my 8 year old was begging to go Sunday afternoon, so I took him out. Saw one doe, but she wouldn't turn broadside for him to get a shot. Went out this evening as soon as my son and I could get away from school.! Saw 4 before we could even get to the stand. Got settled in for the last hour of the day. Saw a dandy buck cut across the corner of the field and head into the woods away from us. Then had a forked horn walk right by us, and I could not get him to stop. Right before dark had another doe come in, but my son struggled to find her in the scope as light was fading fast. Hope to add more ups than downs to this thread for the rest of gun season! Be safe and shoot straight!
Seth Posted November 19, 2015 Posted November 19, 2015 It's been a slow season for me as well. I've seen several fawns and little bucks. Yesterday evening was the first decent hunt I've had. I saw three does, a spike and no doubter. The big buck was with the does and came out at 300 yards. He noticed the spike messing around his women so he ended up chasing him off and never did come back for the does. I watched the does feed towards me till 5:15. They were about 120 yards away and I decided to take the biggest one. She made it about 20 yards inside the woods and piled up. With all of the rain we had, I couldn't drive around the field to get her so I had to drag her 600 yards back to the truck. A guy realizes just how out of shape he is when dragging a good sized deer that far! Needless to slay, I slept like a baby last night and I'm sure the muscles will be nice and sore for the next couple of days. BilletHead, tho1mas, moodyfour and 1 other 4
sms_alum Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 We had a ton of young bucks opening weekend. Our group shot a few does and one buck that probably should have walked. It was a small 8 with a big body. I hope to get after them again on Sunday. I was planning on heading out Saturday but I have no desire to be in a tree stand with 25 mph winds. Good luck in the second weekend if you haven't filled your tags yet.
moodyfour Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 Well it happened! Took my son out again after school this evening and we hadn't been there long and had 3 does come out. Bad part was they were down wind and nervous. They ran back into the woods never to be seen again. Sat a bit longer and two deer came in a hung around just a bit too long. I let Cayden get situated and he finally said he was on the one in front and I said shoot then. Deer hit the ground. He got up and wandered into the woods about 10 steps and falls over dead. Couldn't be more proud of my son on his first kill. What we thought was a doe turned out to be a button buck! Now time to try and kill one for me this weekend! Happy hunting and stay safe! moodyfour Posted November 21, 2015 Author Posted November 21, 2015 Finished the season off with a bang this morning. Windy, raining and then snowing! Once it switched to snow the deer started moving. Had two does come by about 7:50. 8:30 a nice 8 point comes by and my season is over! Saw two other bucks while walking to find my deer! What a gorgeous, but wet morning! BilletHead 1
MOPanfisher Posted November 21, 2015 Posted November 21, 2015 Man they were moving this morning weren't they. I didn't even leave till the snow stopped. Dropped my thermos in the blind and still had deer around within 5 minutes. Nice bucks, little bucks, one real nice buck, a spike I really wanted, unfortunately all but the big one were running hard chasing does, and the does were working hard to play hard to get. And to be honest I got to watching them and forgot I was supposed to shoot one. Could have tagged on at let's but wanted a lil one. Tomorrow is another day. Attached below is one I thought was gonna stick his head in and sniff. moodyfour and Slippery 2
MOPanfisher Posted November 24, 2015 Posted November 24, 2015 A beautiful moon rises signifying the end of my firearms deer season. I saw plenty of deer and fired not a shot, only raised the rifle only rwice, once was on a coyote. From warm and sunny to torrential rain and even snow. I am blessed to live in missouri and it's a good thing I have a wife that can shoot deer so I can just enjoy my time out amongst the critters. Hope you all have a great Thanksgiving. Johnsfolly Posted November 27, 2015 Posted November 27, 2015 Congratulation to Cayden on his first deer. Also congrats to everyone that shot and recovered deer this season. I agree that we are blessed with bountiful game and opportunities to pursue them. We all have to remember that all of that can be taken from us with a single vote. BilletHead and moodyfour 2
