Mitch f Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 During summer months, Any time there is a forecast for rain starting midday, I try to make it to the river. First, it keeps everyone else off the river. Second, the fish always bite well during the low pressure. I've rarely been burned doing this. Al Agnew Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 Yeah, but sometimes you gamble and lose, and it comes a wicked thunderstorm. I've come too close to getting struck by lightning. And if it's one of those rare summer days when it stays cloudy all day without thunderstorms...I've actually had some of my worst fishing days under those conditions, which means that the old "low light, fish bite" thing is a bit questionable. dtrs5kprs, Mitch f and Blll 3

My wife chewed me out for fishing in a thunderstorm with lightning a few weeks back. I've had some close calls with lightning over the years, so it was good to be reminded of how dangerous it can be. Some of my very best trips for trophy class fish have occurred preceding a strong storm. But its not worth the risk. My motto now, "Live to fish another day"

My motto now, "Live to fish another day" There is always another day to fish, provided you don't get hit by lightning when you should have been in a slip or off the lake. I'm with Al on this. I'll fish all day in cold rain in winter or early spring. Warm rain in April/May, or during the summer makes me keep one eye on the sky and both ears open. Storms are actually one of the reasons I started fishing closer to the ramp most of the time. Too many dodgy moments with lightning and bad t-storms/tornados.
Smallieguy87 Posted January 8, 2016 Posted January 8, 2016 I floated the big river last summer in on an off showers and thunderstorms and it did get a bit worrisome but did manage to have a great day of fishing. It wasn't enough to make the water muddy but it did get them feeding.
