mic Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 As posted in the review forum... I got a book called Simple Flies. He is a sample of my first two. Herl nymph - nymph hook, couple three turns of lead in thorax, pinched flat, black thread, super glue, and peacock herl The next is my take on the killer bug... Same as above but with Jamieson’s Shetland Spindrift Yarns (290 oyster color). This wool yarn is amazing. The pic does not do it justice. The "correct" way is with no thread or lead, only copper wire. Simply forgot, but I will tie some that way next Ham and Buzz 2
fishinwrench Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 You'll be surprised at how effective those will be.
mic Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 I need to work on my macro photography... LOL
ness Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 Big fan of simple right here. I like those -- keep 'em coming! John
mic Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 Here is the killer bug done the "correct way" with wire thread. I figured out after the first one, not to make much of a body with the wire. The down and back makes the cigar shape. Not sure, I might like black headed thread better. Eric82 1
mic Posted January 6, 2016 Author Posted January 6, 2016 Here is the Pheasant Tail Nymph using wire instead of thread. I tried it the Sawyer way, but I just like the look of it with peacock herl. However, I still have three or less ingredients and adding the herl was very simple: X-Small copper wire (could probably you small also), Pheasant tail, and peacock herl. The tricks I found are: 1. Be gentle with the wire in the bobbin. 2. Leave yourself a long tag end to work with; any leftover you can use as an under body in your next fly. 3. Might be my herl, but one feather seemed to work better than a bunch. 4. Use superglue under the herl and on the final head (but apply before the whip finish). If you haven't seen it I used the process in a fly tying video I posted earlier. Once I got it down, it worked well. I'm pretty sure this is the best looking PHN I have ever tied... now that isn't saying much. Ham, BilletHead, ness and 1 other 4
Ham Posted January 6, 2016 Posted January 6, 2016 I like em mic. It looks like a LOT of hook compared to body on the PT, but let the fish decide. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish

podum Posted January 7, 2016 Posted January 7, 2016 There's a lot of advice out there to tie a fly one size smaller than the hook. Love the pheasant tail Mic. I wish I had more time more than I wish I had more money.
