Guest Posted January 14, 2016 Posted January 14, 2016 Their failure to make adjustments on the fly was disappointing. Makes you wonder if they rely heavily on local information & guides. Catching numbers seems to be a foreign concept to them. Their unwillingness to try a spinning rod was surprising. At least, BP had sense enough to start with topwater & switch to a drop shot. It's a smallmouth fishery on a bluebird day & no wind. The very first bait I'm going to try is a weightless 4" senko Texas rigged or a fluke. The 1/16oz Ned would've cleaned house at chapmans marina.

I bet a few, I'm certainly not claiming that I think I could beat those guys, but like Trophy is saying, fish that Ned around those docks and a person would catch some fish. And steep bare rock banks look inviting. I'd try some deep Ned in about 20 FOW off those banks. dtrs5kprs 1
dtrs5kprs Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 The friend I was text-watching it with is quite the finesse stick, former B.A.S.S. competitor. We sit there and practically scream at the TV like it is football. Hello, it's a numbers game. Not that finesse automatically eliminates quality bites. A handful of 15-16" smallmouth would rock that thing. Catching 8-10 fish over 12" per period would be hard to beat, on any lake they visit, at least from how most rounds have finished. Guest Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I'm surprised nobody fished any finesse. They automatically break out the Carolina rig in sequence. Who does that? It really goes to show you, they refuse to fish light line & spinning rods. As if, they're going to catch a communicable disease. "We don't fish with those wimpy sticks" Well, you're a moron on live TV with an empty live well. Stubbornness is the Achilles heel.
J-Doc Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 Have yall not see A-Mart or Erhler stomp the other guys with a dropshot on MLF? Evendors Hackney throws a finesse presentation. I've seen several using finesse but never what we think of as "Midwest Finesse" or really small baits. Watching A-Mart is like watching an insane homeless guy. Mumbling and talking to himself. Lol!! He's like a dude you run into inside 7-11 at 2am, who can't figure out if he has enough change for another slurpee. Probably a great guy, better fisherman than we will ever be. Just shocked his sponsors haven't polished him more. There are guys who have finesse fished in MLF. Just shocking that in this particular event they all bought into the grass on a, wait for it, highland lake. Especially one known for brown fish. Then stayed with power to the bitter end. With bright sun and no wind. At some point you just need bites. J-Doc and Quillback 2

Guest Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 I watched Ehrler whip them last year, but I was talking about the Dale Hollow lake with grass. Also, why didnt they try slow rolling the deeper grass with deep divers or heavy spinnerbaits & swimbaits. That seems like it would work better, but the lack of wind really puts the fish in a funk. Im not saying I would beat any of them, but I would've beat 2-3 of them at the least in this event. Most folks haven't encountered grass & smallmouth, but its quite possibly the best environment I've found. Bella Vista would have grass if they let it grow like it should. Think if those lakes had smallmouth & hydrilla?

Think if those lakes had smallmouth & hydrilla? Unless there is different coverage to come, it sure looked like they saw that grass and got the green fish bug. Brown fish use grass a lot differently than largemouth do. What I can't get a grip on is how any of them could just stay at something that wasn't working, especially since they knew what they needed. To his credit, Christie made a change and got after it. Champ188 1
Ham Posted January 15, 2016 Posted January 15, 2016 To me what's crazy about the MLF deal, is that KVD has beat them to death multiple times catching small keepers. I'm surprised that no one else is going that route. dtrs5kprs and Blll 2 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
