I have noticed a few posts about time for float n fly, I know generally what it is but would like to know more about how to set up to the rig and when is the best time to use it. I would like to use it to catch crappie if possible.

thanks Rusty

For crappie, I have a 10-foot medium action spinning outfit spooled with 6-pound mono. I'll clip a weighted styrofoam cork on the line however many feet I choose up from my Arkie Lures Shineee Hineee jig and fling away. With this long rod, I can cast my jig with the cork 15 feet up the line. Same basic deal as the float n fly.

Don Baldridge has some videos up on YouTube with some fnf crappie fishing. Winkiedoodles on YouTube. Just basic float fishing.

He tried it with me at TR a couple of years back. Ended up catching brown fish.

It was actually pretty funny. It was just after I'd caught some really nice crappie while soaking the little rig. He was super inspired, and super disappointed. He hangs the little Garland/Larews baits under the float.

Every time I try some tweak to a technique to open it up for crappie or deep bluegill or walleye or catfish MOST of what I catch on it are smallies.

examples: deep spoon tipped  with gulp for big bluegill = smallies

Shad Rap 4's and 5"s strolled for crappie on flats in springtime = smallies

3 inch gulp minnows on Ned Heads for walleye or catfish = more smallies

dropping small plastics at the base of sinken trees in 20-30 FOW = smallies

Bull Shoals has a smallie problem.

So do I.
