bfishn Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 ...had the window down and passed one of my spots today and I swear I smelled 'em. Got out and walked a stretch and it suddenly got real quiet... and I could hear 'em rustling the leaves... next several days wet & in the 60s. 'Nuff said. dan hufferd, slab slinger, trythisonemv and 1 other 4 I can't dance like I used to.
Deadstream Posted March 8, 2016 Posted March 8, 2016 Keep us updated. I'm pretty sure that a late March will mess it all up. It did smell like Crappie and Mushrooms up north here today, I checked. We need rain BAD in the north MO.
jdmidwest Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 I was looking at the forecast this week too and thinking the same thing. A week of avg temp in 50's would be magic in April. Doubt if it will produce any, too early. What will probably happen is the warm spell will start the grass and by the time shrooms kick in, they will all be hidden. bfishn Posted March 9, 2016 Author Posted March 9, 2016 True that. Nature woke up here last Friday. Buds on lots of trees and the pear trees blooming. Like you flipped a switch. Those green patches you mentioned are starting. I don't do well where I'm at now in March, but 25 yrs and another county ago I scored well early. I'd go back there but it's pointless... can't beat the locals to 'em. I can't dance like I used to.
Gavin Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Have never found one before March 20th in the St. Louis area...,and the few I have found in March are usually tiny...smaller than a dime.
ness Posted March 9, 2016 Posted March 9, 2016 Noticed yesterday my red maple and pear trees are popping. Got an inch and a half of rain yesterday with more expected tomorrow. Don't know when I'll find mushrooms, but this stuff has to happen first. trythisonemv 1 John
jdmidwest Posted March 10, 2016 Posted March 10, 2016 We still need some sun to warm the ground. Not much of that around here lately since the last cold spell. But things are greening up. Willows turning green, magnolias blooming, bradford pears forming blooms. Bees bringing in pollen from something. Lots of little purple ground cover and dandelions starting. Duck and geese heading north, see them every morning jumping off ponds on way to work. trythisonemv and ness 2 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. jdmidwest Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 I think all the spores took a boat ride around here today. Ground is saturated, but most went south. "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Deadstream Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 The rain yesterday changed a lot of things here, went from brown to green in hours. It's going to be another tall grass year I think. Like Ness said, it's starting to bloom fast. Makes the easy picking hard. I have a good mushroom stick but my knees are really getting bad.
ness Posted March 11, 2016 Posted March 11, 2016 Same here. My yard greened up quickly after the rain and the dirt paths my dogs have worn don't seem so barren today. I may have to do a clean up mow this weekend. John
