moguy1973 Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Really?!? It's all about points now? And winning Opens/BassNation/College? I searched for about 30 minutes yesterday and there isn't any information out there at all on who qualifies for the 2017 Classic. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Quillback Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Do a search on "Bassmaster Classic qualifying 2017". You'll get some results that lay some of it out. Nothing I can find on the Bassmaster web site explains it. They've redesigned the site, and I am not impressed by the changes. From what I can tell, they have dropped the number of Open qualifiers from 6 to 3. The winner of BassFest qualifies for the Classic. They have a new event this year, an 8 angler bracket tourney. It's on the Niagara river somewhere. Winner gets a Classic berth. Other than that, it is all about the points (except for college and other miscellaneous qualifiers). I think it stinks that winning an Elite event does not qualify you for the Classic, but based on my limited understanding of the process of how they make these changes, the Elite anglers have a panel that has input on who qualifies.
moguy1973 Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 Maybe too many local guys that had no chance of getting enough points to qualify were winning tourneys and getting a berth to the Classic and the bigger names didn't like that. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Ham Posted April 18, 2016 Posted April 18, 2016 IF and I stress "IF" the selection process was determined by the competition committee which is made up of professional fisherman, than they made it like they wanted it. It seems like a win on the Elite level should get you in before a win on the Opens does, but its not my party. mixermarkb and dtrs5kprs 2 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. LarrySTL Posted April 19, 2016 Posted April 19, 2016 Historically the Elite guys are much more impressed with the Angler of the Year standings than the results of any one tournament as far as who is really "best". Whether because of the prize money or sponsorship contract incentives, a few of them have been much more focused on a win. Clunn, Brauer, Jordon, and a few others have been much more about winning than the annual standings. I have read a few times that most of the Elites didnt like "win and youre in". I agree that its a lot easier ( tho nowhere near "easy") to win an Open and I have wondered in the past if "fish all three in an Open division, win one of those and you're in" was done by the owners to try to get more people fishing the Opens ( and paying the $ 2500 x 3 tournaments) entry fees. Either that or the relative ease of getting a pretty good check in relation to the entry fee, has resulted in a lot of mid-level Elites fishing the Opens. http://intervenehere.com
moguy1973 Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 So I just found out who qualifies and who doesn't. Took this screen shot during the live show from Wheeler where they were talking about it. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Quillback Posted April 29, 2016 Posted April 29, 2016 Thanks for that Moguy. Amazing how they don't have the qualifying info on their website. I wonder who they determine who qualifies for the "Classic Bracket"? I'm thinking it is all the winners of the Elite events this year, excluding BassFest.

From their facebook page https://www.facebook.com/events/914563071947187/ : In the Bassmaster Classic Bracket tournament, the Top 8 finishers in Elite No. 7 on Cayuga Lake, N.Y., will go head-to-head in a bracket format tournament that will pay $50,000 in cash — in addition to the prize money they will have earned at Cayuga — and award a guaranteed spot in the Super Bowl of Bass Fishing, the 2017 GEICO Bassmaster Classic. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
