Members CrookedResident Posted May 16, 2016 Members Posted May 16, 2016 I'm debating on a installing a jet on my 50 hp etec from www.outboardjets.com in San Leandro, CA or doing a re-power with one of Evinrudes new factory jet outboards that come in 3 sizes. I will be choosing the 60 hp (jet hp not power head) It will most likely be going on my 16' 50" Xpress, and I was curious to know if anyone has had any dealings with either the outboard jet.com product, or the new Evinrude factory jets any maybe could give comparison and/or synopsis. Please advise.
Seth Posted May 16, 2016 Posted May 16, 2016 I ran a 2008 115/80hp Etec for four years and a 2013 150/105 Etec jet for the past two. They have treated me well and I'm a fan. Cowtown in Cuba, MO is who I deal with and they have always treated me right. Eberlin's in Hermann, MO also deals with a lot of Etec jet drives. Aside from the different labeling on the cowling, there won't be any difference between a factory jet and a prop motor that has had the lower unit swapped by a dealer. The factory jets will be rated by the horsepower being put out at the jet instead of by the powerhead, hence the difference in the cowling labels. The 40hp is equivalent to a 60hp powerhead, the 60hp jet is equivalent to a 90hp power head and the 105hp jet is equivalent to a 150hp power head, like what I currently have. My current rig is an 1860 Legend SS Vbass. With the 150/105, I run 42-44 mph downstream and around 37-39 mph upstream on the Gasconade. Smalliebigs 1
Members CrookedResident Posted May 17, 2016 Author Members Posted May 17, 2016 Thanks Seth, awesome rig. I didn't put this in my original post, but my other option and or alternative is to put a jet on my 150 hp etec on my 20' 70" Xpress. It's pretty wide and floats in less water than most might think. Dealer says around $2200 for the 50 hp jet conversion and $2800 for the 150 powerhead jet conversion. And the new 60hp jet etec (90 hp powerhead) is around $9600 before trade. I guess around $100 a horse still stands true....

fishinwrench Posted May 17, 2016 Posted May 17, 2016 I'm not sure if the standard prop E-tec ignition system has a rev limiter but with a jet pump installed a rev limiter is a good way to keep the rods inside the block where they belong, and the pump from grenading. Warranty isn't worth the paper it's written on if the ECM has logged a rev over 6.5k
Members CrookedResident Posted May 17, 2016 Author Members Posted May 17, 2016 Good to know wrench, thank you.

My 115 would max out around 5400 and my current 150 ends up around 5100.
JamiePatterson Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Maybe he's talking about over revving when the motor cavitates. My 40/30 yamaha will cavitates sometimes running up a big shoal. Choppy water makes the tunnel dump a bit. Granted, this is only in extreme conditions. However, it did it running out of the catch and release on norfork twice last weekend...
fishinwrench Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Right, Jamie, if the jet pump takes a gulp of air the powerhead will go 8000+ RPM real quick without a rev limiter.
Seth Posted May 18, 2016 Posted May 18, 2016 Just did a Google search and I keep seeing 6250 RPM's as the hard rev limit for a stock Etec EMM. I've personally ran in some pretty rough waters on LOZ where I was cavitating pretty bad. I've still never seen my tach reach over 5600 rpm's. When it is that rough, I can't run WOT anyways because flat bottom aluminum boats ride like a chuck wagon in rough water.
