Usually a bass will hold onto a jig.  Don't be in to big a hurry and just swing on one.  Drop your rod tip and throw a little slack at em before you start your upswing.  That little slack creates more rod speed and when it comes taught it really drives the hook home as you follow through.

X2 on braid.  Makes a huge difference and it lasts much longer than flouro or mono which balances out the additional cost.  Have tried most, IMO Power Pro is the best - use it on all my jig and trolling rods including ultralights.  There is no better hook set than when you stick it to them with braid.

After u set the hook up can't give the bass ANY slack. Reel as fast as u can to get control of the fish. If u watch and pause on TV u can see exactly when they spit it. 9 out of ten times they have to get their mouth out of the water to shake it out...

p.s.drag shouldn't be as tight as possible a hair looser than all the way tight

Thanks for all the advise gents. I went out again in Tuesday dodging all the storms and was able to connect on way more by shortening my casts/flips and dropping my rod tip before the hook set. I didnt have the time to switch out the line yet and lost several jigs just on hook sets. I now have several spools of power pro to rig a couple rods up with. My confidence in jigs is pretty solid now...not sure I will be aboe to put them down! Now on to drop shotting...something else I have used very little.

I like to fish my drag light. Because I know that first run might be like. But I got a educated thumb. It is clamping down on the spool the second it feel the hit.  '

I am the same way OldPlug, all braid on my reels, drag set so that it will slip a little on the hookset.  and if I need more my thumb or index finger on a spinning reel automatically move in to apply more.  I fish a lot with light tackle, sometimes that first stick of the hook in a big fish whether a bass, catfish or walleye results in a spectacular rush, and you have to be able to give a little if needed.  Also if you are fishing braid take a look at your knot, you might benefit from a different knot, they don't all work nearly as well on braid.  I still use the Palomar some, but more often use a Fishing Fool knot.

Braid,Braid,Braid,Just look at what the pros who fish for a living throw.I bet most of them throw fluorocarbon in open water.#15 works great for me.I make my own jigs and use only owner or gamakatsu hooks. You can't hardly find store bought jigs with that quality hook.Braid will work just fine

Do not bet on that. They throw whatever their sponsor give them to throw. I have been using pro bass shops almost exclusively for many many years. I have never had a problem with the line quality. Only failures I had were mostly do to me.  I think a awful lot of fishermen fish by the label and claims. Then they make poor knots or donot check the line for abrasions and it breaks.

There are plenty of good books on the market. It is mostly the hook setter that is lacking.

image.pngimage.pngI think I have it figured out. The braid helped tremendously and Ive only lost a couple over the last few nights. Plug hit it on the head though. I lost a couple jigs on hook sets even with the braid and I bet the line was nicked after being run through all those dock cables. Tonight I fished Shawnee bend area after dark. Black/blue jig caught seven keeps to include this pig!
