The line trick is handy but it's also a good idea to use a little caution when deciding whether or not to try it. In this case, he might have done considerable damage (vein, tendons) and been sorry in the long run.

I knelt down on the front deck once to land a tournament partner's fish and put my knee directly on a crank bait. You'd be surprised how few nerves are in the skin covering the kneecap. Hardly hurt at all. Couldn't do the line trick coz my partner nearly passed out just looking at the situation, so I ended up pushing it thru myself with needlenose pliers (that skin is TOUGH!!!), snipping off the hook point and pulling it back out. But that was in a noncritical area without important stuff like tendons and larger veins.

Again, good call to go to the ER in this case.

Absolutely, the line trick is Great, but it is not a one size fits all deal.

Wish I would have been there.  I would not have been squeamish about it at all.

I'm sure you would have gladly performed the operation and that your abilities are top-shelf. It's your bedside manner that would've concerned me.

Last time I had one of those it was in my finger and couldn't get anyone at the dock to pull on the line for me and couldn't bring myself to do it with my left hand. I went to an Urgent care center and the doc who pulled it out was a young female about 25 years old and 90 lbs. She asked if she could sit in my lap to get a better angle. After that experience I almost want to stick one in my hand on purpose.....Took her about 10 minutes and she kept apologizing, I just just smiled through the whole procedure. Insurance paid but I almost left a tip....

Used this once wasn't the most pleasant but it worked and kept me from paying hospital bills and kept me on the water.

Bought a couple of these in the hopes we can avoid this situation from happening again....
