Mitch f Posted July 30, 2016 Posted July 30, 2016 I see Yozuri has a new 100% fluorocarbon line called Top Knot http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/icast16.html?ccode=YO16B "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor

This knot is what I call a double Palomar. I read about it and started using it for braid. The relationship of the overhand knot to the surgeons knot serves as the analogy for the palomar knot to the nanofil knot. Unintentional double post. Don't know how or why. Sorry. Ham 1

drew03cmc Posted July 31, 2016 Posted July 31, 2016 I use copolymer on casting gear, CXX "8lb" is one I like a lot. My spinning gear is all braid though, 15/4 PP. I generally run an 8lb Red Label leader tied with a Triple Surgeons knot. I don't have confidence fishing braid without a leader for anything. Andy

Drew how well does the triple surgeons knot go through the guides. I am ready to try mono leaders on braid again but have had horrible luck with them slipping and coming undone. I have no issues with confidence in braid directly to a jig, just issues with abrasion against rocks etc. The braid just doesn't handle it as well. drew03cmc 1

I'm not Drew and YMMV BUT I hear it hit the guides on the way out and I don't think the triple pass surgeon's knot is anywhere near as strong as the alberto. It may be plenty for what you are doing with it, but I found it to be a little wanting. It is a lot easier to tie than the alberto to be sure. Edited to add: that it does of course depend on the size of the line and the leader. It may be that I heard it with 20lb/8 lb diameter braid and 8 lb leader and you may not with smaller braid and smaller leader. Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. MOPanfisher Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I will see if I can tie the alberto, I tried the albright and it failed on me. I wonder if the smaller lb test line is making a difference. The last time I lost a shad rap ir was with some 10# fireline and I think 10 # Stren mono. Thanks Ham.
Ham Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I wish I could show you how in person. It's a lot easier when you see it done slowly. Make the loop with your leader, run your braid up thru the loop from underneath, I wind 7 times down and then 7 times back up, pass your braid back down thru the loop., wet the lines and slowly pull tight. IF you are going to have a failure, it will happen when you pull the lines tight. The knot will fail if you don't get the line passing back through the loop in the correct direction. The good news is that the knot either fails completely right then or its good to go. You won't have a knot that looks good at first only to fail on you when you hook a fish. I have NEVER had an alberto fail on a fish.; I've been using it for years at this point and have literally caught 1000's of fish using an Alberto knot. I do have an alberto fail when I am hung and put a dead pull on it trying to bend the hook out or pull loose from snag. A word of warning, if you are using nanofil and you try to use a leader than is heavier than the nanofil, it will break at the alberto knot when you pull against a snag every time. If the leader is weaker than the nanofil, many times the leader will fail and you may have enough leader remaining to avoid having to re-tie everything. I start with about 6 foot or so of leader material, that way the leader knot is just above my reel after I tie my lure on. i won't tie a new eager on until I get down to 18 inches of the original leader length. MOPanfisher Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 I am gonna have to practice on the Alberto, I tried a couple times both times it just sort of came apart on the pull, obviously I miss stroked on getting the line back hough the loop correctly, was too dang hot in boat barn to practice more. Nanofil is mostly on my crappie rigs and I don't mind it tied directly to the jig, but sometimes my crappie rig become my walleye rig becomes my creek rig.
Ham Posted August 1, 2016 Posted August 1, 2016 When I'm throwing braid on spinning, I want the leader to be that weak link I can break when I need to. It can be difficult to break 20 lb line. Hard on the rod and reel and can put you in a bad spot on flowing water. The leader extends the life of the more expensive nano or braid as well. I also like the less visible connection to the lure, Gavin 1 Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. On Instagram @hamneedstofish
