I had my doubts when I picked them and took them into the office for the mushroom expert.  I was busy that night and did not even bother to look them over close.  But I was not going to eat one till I knew for sure.

The gills and the stem had me wondering.  But the trumpet shape added to the confusion.  Most chanterelles I had seen were tender and a lighter mushroom.  These had a tough outer skin.

I searched long and hard today and really can't tell what they are.
