Members audiochem Posted March 11, 2017 Members Posted March 11, 2017 Bass were biting today, but the crappie weren't. Highlight of the day was catching an infamous mean mouth (see pic). Only the second I've ever caught zarraspook 1
Members crazyfishinchic Posted March 11, 2017 Members Posted March 11, 2017 I think it's a Kentucky spotted bass. The red eye and mouth doesn't extend beyond the eye. My dad caught a 8.9 lbs one at Stockton Mitch f and Phil Lilley 2 GO CHIEFS!!!

moguy1973 Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 8.9lb spot would be the state record. By a lot. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
Members audiochem Posted March 11, 2017 Author Members Posted March 11, 2017 You might be right. It was rather football shaped. It just looked to much like a smallie and less like the spots I'm used to seeing...and this isn't the best picture. I should have taken more.
Dutch Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I would like to have seen more pics. That looks more like a spot that the mean mouths that I have seen.
Mitch f Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 The markings are spots, the color is a dead giveaway for a hybrid trythisonemv 1 "Honor is a man's gift to himself" Rob Roy McGregor
straw hat Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 As a biologist I have taken part in way too much speculation like this. It is real confusing. Thank God when genetic testing came out. The only problem is that it was too late for me to tale advantage of. lol trythisonemv 1
trythisonemv Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I think there is some genetic mix there... Mostly spotted bass though. I didn't realize how many Kentucky's we have now in Missouri. Only ever caught one personally. Mitch f 1
Lifes2Short Posted March 11, 2017 Posted March 11, 2017 I have caught more Kentucky's this year up at Stockton than ever. I remember fishing the bridge pilings up @ Twin Bridges this past fall and I must have caught 20 small Kentucky's on 30 casts, all were small in the 8 to 12 inch range but they were stacked on those pilings. However this spring out of 100 fish I bet less than 5% were Kentucky's. It will be interesting to see if they drop the size limit on them to 12"......which I strongly support. I'm thinking 12' Spots would be tasty in some hot oil! :-) Now where did that warm weather go? Tight Lines!
