grizwilson Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 As a long time longbow shooter, who has opposed crossbows for years, once again in life I am forced to eat my words. Due to recent events I will be unable to shoot my shotgun for spring turkey season, and pulling my longbow.....hopefully at some point in the future. So.... started looking at Crossbows and asking questions.... the price range is unbelievable. One guy says this is what I want: http://www.basspro.com/TenPoint-Carbon-Nitro-RDX-Crossbow-Package-with-AcuDraw/product/2299615/ I read on a forum that this has the same specs only difference is a carbon rail and a place to store the crank: http://www.basspro.com/Horton-Storm-RDX-Crossbow-Package-with-ACUdraw/product/1503121741/ both are terrible expensive, but I need some easy cocking device......but quality often costs. Both bows are made by Ten point who I understand now owns Horton.Maybe I just need to take up flea market shopping or ???? Appreciate ideas thoughts. g BilletHead 1 “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
MOPanfisher Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Not sure on how easy the cocking would be but there are lots of cross bows available for less than $400. Mostly from small dealers who sell out of their homes etc. probably. I have never been opposed to crossbows or special regs for those with medical reasons, honestly not really opposed to crossbows at all, don't think there will be any appreciable difference in harvest. I am more concerned about the latest round of CWD testing, 2 positive cases in St. Clair County, 5.1 miles by google earth from my house. Not sure the MDC's normal plan of kill every deer in the area will fly there, they will never get enough landowners permission to do it I don't think.

My first step will be Turkey season...I too worry about cwd. I do have the opportunity to get a Horton listed above from a smaller outfit for $750 or the 10 pt. for 1200 with the accudraw. Hope the reverse limbs work ok, I am usually scared of new things. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
BilletHead Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Grizz, Feel your pain friend. When I had to change from a self bow it was a step from the stone age to the future. If you have not been around cross bows or shot one be ready to be shocked. I have the ten point titian extreme. Real happy with it. Heavy as cross bows are. Guess they are not heavy just comparing to my self bow. Just weighed both and my self bow is a whopping pound and the cross bow ten pounds on the nose with a sling and without the quiver and arrows. I realize holding the crossbow for the shot is different as most will steady on the leg or mono or tri pod. I have the steady eddy ten point sells and it has its places for use. have the accu draw on mine. Got the package at the Pro a few years back on sale. Making the step I did not want top of the line to start and after getting this I see no reason to do that. This does all I need it to do. If you have any questions PM me. MoPanfisher, Yep heard a week or more back about the CWD over your way. Got a good friend in Weableau and he got me some more info on it. Pretty scary for our deer herd. Pretty neat info here and you can zoom right in on the areas including where they were found in St. Clair county https://huntfish.mdc.mo.gov/hunting-trapping/wildlife-diseases/chronic-wasting-disease-cwd/cwd-surveillance-and-monitoring The other day when I zoomed on this map it showed the exact locations that had positive results. Not sure where the icons went for them? MOPanfisher Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 I have the map from MDC and one of my co-workers hunts the farm and knows the 2 individuals who checked in the CWD Bucks.
BilletHead Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Yep same farm. Any pen raised deer in that immediate area that you know of? JestersHK Posted March 17, 2017 Posted March 17, 2017 I picked up a Barnett DOA last year during black Friday... Although there are some out there with issues I have been more than impressed with the performance and accuracy. crossbownation.com is a pretty amazing site. Guys over there are super helpful and are more than willing to help you out. One thing I learned quick was make sure to buy once cry once on arrows... I had some arrows custom built at from Jerry at www.southshorearcherysupply.com His arrows are amazing and at even 30 yards I have to shoot at different bullseyes in fear of robinhooding an arrow. I knew they were accurate, but the end results of literally shooting the same hole over and over blew me away...
grizwilson Posted March 18, 2017 Author Posted March 18, 2017 Thanks for the helps, I am started sure that I have many lessons to learn. “If a cluttered desk is a sign, of a cluttered mind, of what then, is an empty desk a sign?”- Albert Einstein
duckydoty Posted March 18, 2017 Posted March 18, 2017 My wife has the Horton Storm RDX and I have the Tenpoint Stealth FX4. I like the compactness of the Horton and the balanced feel with the reverse draw. Makes the crossbow feel lighter when shouldered. The acu draw on both is awesome. I can crank it with 2 fingers. I like shooting the Tenpoint Stealth better though. A little more thump in it and accurate out of the box at 50 yards. I'm shooting carbon bolts and the cross hairs line up at 20, 30, 40, and 50 yards. My wife shoots aluminum bolts and her crosshairs end up being 20, 25, 30, and 35 yards. Bass Pro catalog return room in Springfield is loaded with crossbows right now at 40-50 percent off original price. Most of them were display models from last years models that are sent in and gone over then sold as reconditioned. That is where my wife and I got ours last year. The have several models of Ten Point and the Horton Storm RDX right now. Go check them out if you get a chance A Little Rain Won't Hurt Them Fish.....They're Already Wet!! Visit my website at.. Although too much money at $500 off I felt it was a good value. Took it next door to the store and they set it up for me. Under Billethead's guidance I have ordered some Swacker broadheads. I bought the tenpoint carbon arrows. I am sure I will destroy some fletching. Trying to decide which fletching jig, I am accustom to left wing helical feathers, do not think that will cut it. old dog having to learn new tricks.
