I was doing some test runs of a new to me gas motor yesterday. There are a few things I need to do to it. So instead,  we used the tolling motor to go up current.  It is a 32lb thrust MinnKota not sure of age.  We were in a gheenoe, I weigh approximately 230, my son about 60.  The motor started to get very warm, but never hot.   We ended up losing 5th speed, and temporarily 4th and 3rd.   Reverse was out for a while also ( all 3 speeds).  I  am sure it's time for a new one,  what recommendation would you give?  We're we over powering it? I would like to keep it 12v, and family priced.

The biggest enemy of trolling motors is using them with low battery voltage.   The lower the voltage the greater the heat.   Bushings expand, brushes glaize over, seals get soft, ect.  And when one contact gets poor then the ones downstream of it begin to degrade.

Bottom line:. If you are running your battery(s) below 1/2 charge during your outings then you are gradually killing your TM.    Usually one size bigger TM, fresh batteries, and some knowledge on charging is what everyone who suffers from TM issues needs.

If you never run them on low battery voltage those things will last forever and never get weak.

Brand new battery,  group 27dc, always kept charged on a maintainer.  The same with my previous battery, only replaced because it was 5 years old.  This was the second trip out with this battery.  Not sure of previous usage/ handling of the motor.  I have had it for about 5 years, used it possibly 10-12 times.

Is there any hope of salvaging the motor?  Or is a new one in order?

If new, I would like to go with a 55lb thrust at bass pro, unless there are any better ideas.  I have $150 worth of gift cards from work bonuses to Bass Pro, the motor I looked at online was $219.00.  Thoughts, suggestions?

Thank you for the input so far.
