Members Big_Jake Posted July 6, 2017 Members Posted July 6, 2017 Well the new TopWater 2160 has arrived. In limited use over this past weekend we were very impressed with its stability and smooth ride. Decided to go with the 40hp Mercury jet and that will be a learning curve for sure. I was shocked at how differently it handled compared to a prop. The boat isn't 100% completed as they will add SeaDek to the front and rear decks and a few other little items. But, all-in-all it is a fantastic boat I think we'll get many many years of enjoyment out of it. Mitch f, Ham, Greasy B and 2 others 5
Members Big_Jake Posted July 6, 2017 Author Members Posted July 6, 2017 Also, open to any tips/advice on things to have in the boat to improve safety and enjoyment. I would like to figure out a way to mount the paddle and net where they are easily accessible, secure and off the floor. Thanks, Jacob
grizwilson Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 Sweet Rig Jacob, you will LOVE the spot lock on your TM. Yes sir the jet is a bit different than the prop, with prop you have the tiller steer without motor running, Jet not running equal no steering. When I first got mine ran over a bunch of leaves in a tight spot ended up on the bank.... learning experience. But it is like 4 wheel drive for your boat, never plan to be without the jet or the spot lock. Ham Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 We need to get together and let me show you my drag chain design. I know you have a fancy TM, but using a drag chain can be useful too. Nice boat! Jdecoudres Posted July 7, 2017 Posted July 7, 2017 Nice boat. I almost went with topwater, but went with xtreme. Mine is getting close as well. I also went with the 60 mercury and I have also always had a prop. Let me know how you like it. Do you plan on rowing yours at all?
Ham Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 I've been driving boats on trailers for over 40 years. My first few attempts at putting my jet on a trailer made me look like I'd never been in a boat before. Here's what I learned along the way. 1) Point your trailer downstream 2) don't ever get off the throttle completely 3) come in from downstream and let the right nose of the boat just clear the downstream edge of the trailer then turn hard right and drive the boat up with a lot of throttle 4) of course, you'll have to learn how hard back in the water to back your boat trailer in Every Saint has a past, every Sinner has a future. I Didn't like it much on day one but by day three I was getting used to it. It's much louder than a prop. I don't intend to row - not my style of fishing.

Mitch f Posted July 8, 2017 Posted July 8, 2017 Jets are more of a point and gun type of running. At first I let the back end slide too much during turns and got in trouble a few times. Avoid sucking up gravel, that will dull the impellers quickly. Also, only one rock can screw up the vortex action and reduce performance greatly. If you're the type of guy that likes to tinker with a boat (I'm not), then keeping your grates straight and sharp will also help performance a great deal.
