Mercury started that 6000 BS not because that's a healthy WOT RPM but because their engines lack the low end grunt for a good hole shot with a steeper prop.

Your Merc outboard might have a sluggish hole shot BUT it will live longer if WOT RPM is 5300-5500

6k is hard on reeds (they heat up and have no way to cool back off) and detonation and overrun becomes increasingly more likely after you exceed 5300.   Just the sound of an outboard running 6k+ should tell you that it is wound up way too tight.

I traded my 60 4 stroke for a 75 Opti then had simon motorsports flash the computer to 115.  It isnt a true 115 but that hull really came to life.  They claim its Peak RPM is 6300 now.   Im not gonna go there thought seems way to high.   First thing i did was put some Chris Carson Sport reeds in it.  Didnt want to risk it with all the horrible Optimax reed problems ive read about. My 24P  4 blade gets me about 5300.   Its a fun little rig, i need to play a little more with props and get it dialed it.   I just like being able to run 40mph at 4800 rpm's.   Feels like i can really get somewhere.

I guess I did just fill it all the way up with gas before the tourney too, that probably didn't help any with 21 gallons of gas back there.

How long will that 60 4-stroke run on 20 gal.of fuel ?

That fuel will be old and nasty before you burn it all up, unless you do alot of running around.

HAHA i think the gas is the issue, i never burn more the 5-7 gallons a day with the 2 stroke and i run the crap out of it.   You would ave to drive all day non stop with the 60 to even burn 10, even with my new motor i have never burned more than 6-8.   and i tend to put a lt of unnecessary mile on mine,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,i say go down a pitch and  you'll pop up on plane quicker but will lose a little top speed

I really never know how much gas I have in the thing because the float doesn't work very well and it shows empty even when there's like a half tank left.  And to be honest, I never knew the gauge worked until I filled it all the way up earlier this year when we were at Stockton and noticed it was reading full.

I seldom run it wide open for that sound. Good advice. I usually settle for less speed and a smoother running engine.

My 50 runs all day on a few gallons. I am going to buy smaller tank and make room for extra battery for 24 v system.

I have been siphoning tank each spring for mowers and put fresh in first time out when I see a no ethanol place. Stabil goes in too.
