Old plug Posted November 18, 2017 Posted November 18, 2017 I use 2 different rods. One 7 ft and the other 51/2 one that os older than most of you on here. In back the docks the 7 footer gets in my way sometimes.in tight docks. I use 20lb pro braid on both. The pro braid 20 slick stuff is the only one I have found that can take as much abuse back in and around cables etc as Mono. I was thinking about trying some Nanofil till I found out it is worthless in abrasive inviorment. Spider wire baid is about useless as well.. Skipping the wacky pays off a lot. I try catch my wacky when it hits the water very near the bank and skip it a couple times and let it sink.with some small jerks. I belev the skipping very near the bank gets the attention of any god bass in thcare
Members Ffer Posted November 21, 2017 Author Members Posted November 21, 2017 When you guys talk about Gamakatsu octopus hooks are these circle hooks where you don't set a hook but rather just reel when a fish bites ?, I've used those hooks when catfishing and they work well for those but when I used them on smallmouth , I can't hook 'em at all. I still want to set a hook and I know you're not supposed to when using circle hooks. I do use a 7-71/2 ' rod med action. Vary between 12 lb fireline yellow}and 6-8lb stren green. These older eyes let me pick up on the line twitches a little better with those lines. Do appreciate the responses. Thanks

Thanks No they aren't a "circle hook" but they are a style of hook that you have to let bite before you set. I just reel into the fish and when I feel like the hook has taken a bite I give it good stab. I whip some 30# mono on them for a snag guard just so I can fish them around dock cables and boat hoists.
Seth Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I use those same hooks and I just reel in to the fish and never actually “set the hook”. Rarely ever loose fish with them. Typically, I throw my wacky senkos on a 7’ medium fast spinning setup with 15# braid and 10# fluorocarbon leader. I’m gonna have to give that mono weed guard deal a try as well.
moguy1973 Posted November 21, 2017 Posted November 21, 2017 I also may have to try making my own weed guards. The Fusion19 ones I’ve been using have a stiff fluorocarbon weed guard on them. Would be cheaper putting my own on there. -- JimIf people concentrated on the really important things in life, there'd be a shortage of fishing poles. -- Doug Larson
RSBreth Posted November 26, 2017 Posted November 26, 2017 It's pretty easy to make your own guards - Matzuo sickle on the left - right is my own made on a Tiemco Bass Bug 8089 with old guitar string. I mostly use the Gammy B10S these days instead of the Tiemco. You can easily do the same with heavy mono. fishinwrench 1
Gavin Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Where are you fishing around Atikokan? Great area, love it up there! Lots of big dumb bass, walleye, pike, occasional Lake Trout. Perch if you fish for them. Prefer the bigger clear lakes. Bass busting on top for cisco's.
Members Ffer Posted November 27, 2017 Author Members Posted November 27, 2017 Fishing out of Crystal Lake resort, but spend a lot of the time at Marmion Lake. Haven't caught any walleye there yet but have seen many large ones cruising. Just too busy with the smallmouth to target the walleye. (truth be told- don't know much at all about fishing for them.) Caught some Lake trout on Crystal but again don't fish for them much because of the smallies. Beautiful country.
Gavin Posted November 27, 2017 Posted November 27, 2017 Have not fished Marmion or Crystal, but had fun on several lakes just east of there. Stayed at Camp Quetico on Lake Eva. Cant wait to go back!
