Saturday Evening on the Upper End

Don't ask me to explain why, but I went out at 5:00 PM this evening. I had hoped the crowd would be going home.

I went down lake toward Eagle Rock. My first stop was a flat edge. I found bait fish, but no strikes. I did catch some fresh mono. See the picture at the end. The person lost over 100 yards of it. Can someone explain how that happens?

My second stop was a tree stump on a outside turn bluff. I fished the deeper side at 37 feet with no bites. I fished the other side at 28 to 30 feet and caught a smallmouth. The next three fish were walleyes. When that tree would give no more, I moved about 50 feet to the next tree and picked up the last fish of my limit. The four were 23, 21, 19, and 18 inches.

All fish came on a white War Eagle 1 oz. spoon.

Congrats RPS! those are some healthy looking walleye and a mess of mono. Thanks for taking that mess home.

Great picture of the mono.  Nicely curled showing memory retention and it appears to be extremely clear.  I'm sure you released it in the catch and release zone of your trash disposal unit.

Gladly those types of catches are extremely rare and as you said somewhat baffling on how they were stocked in our lake.  For sure an invasive species that needed removed.

On a side note, nice to see you back on the walleye trail, those look like prime members of the species.

Dang, i think i was fishing too shallow!  I thought for sure id get one spooning.  Great fish!

When I set out to spoon fish, rather that try it impromptu, I use a set up similar to yours. 10 pound braid (Suffix 832 0r Power Pro), size 12 black swivel, 4 feet of Yozuri Hybrid in 10 pound. I prefer the War Eagle to the CC because of the swivel and hooks. Binks makes a great spoon too.

I recently learned my favorite metered braid, Power Pro Depthunter, is no longer available in 10#. I could not find a Suffix metered 10# either. Fortunately, several years ago I bought a 3000 yard spool of the Power Pro.
