Never had a real issue with a boat trailer. Mostly tires or wheel bearing maintenance. The same can be said for travel trailers, but add plumbing!

I can't tell you how many times we have had trailer tires explode here while just sitting.   It happens all the time.

I have a theory that it is because alot of the trailers around here have set for lengthy periods, long enough to get a flat spot on the tires.  The boat basically lives on a hoist and the trailer lives in the weeds for months/years.  The boat needs service so they air up the tires (which look fine) put the boat on it and haul it to the shop.   2-4 days later....Ka-Boom!  Luckily one has never done it while I was standing next to it, or while I was in the boat working.

Between that and the air inside pontoons warming up every day/cooling down every night and doing that popping/creaking/crying/growling/gurgling thing they do, sudden explosions and weird freaky sounds around here are very common.  Sometimes it's like a pontoon symphony that's kinda cool.  Other times it sounds like a haunted graveyard, or like there's a zombie, feral pig, or tortured child in our yard. 😳

         Boy Wrench,

You left this discussion wide open for a joke. I am going to be a good boy and not say it, not say it, not say it, not say it.

As far as trailer tires. I have had some strange wear patterns on some. If I can find one laying around I will take a photo. Like Gavin said it is cheaper to buy them already mounted on rims.

I'm anal when it comes to tires. I'd rather pay double and know that there is some pretty tough construction between the rims and the road.  Having a "flat" is an inconvenience. Having a "blowout" on a curve is just as dangerous as being thrown from a boat.  You'll never find soft tires "cushioning the ride" on any of my vehicles or trailers.

Could you be describing yourself on a boat repair day when things are not going so well? 😁

Ha!   I've learned to recognize those kinda days early on, so when they happen I regroup and move to more Fail-Safe projects. Some days are just cursed and everything you touch turns to poo.  Other days you can do no wrong, and perfection is effortless.

Today I'm killin' it!  💪😀

It's creepy as hell when a tire on a trailer just siting around goes kaboom!  If you are very close its even worse, makes you duck, seek cover, consider options for retuning fire, and wondering what condition your underwear is now in.  Flat tires suck at the very best it is a major inconvenience.  Good tires are worth the money.
