I am told that the Mississippi River "stocks" the lakes in the park during the floods.  A few years ago we went and my now 11 year old son caught a bowfin.  I had NO idea what it was.  It unhooked right as we were swinging it over the boat.   I got a good look at it, and explained it to a guy in the parking lot.   He called it a dogfish.  We looked it up and eventually found it to be the bowfin.   Let me tell you,  it was concerning me that no one would believe me.  It was as ugly as a fish I've ever seen.  Teeth spaced, barbells like a catfish, scales and a long forehead.   Lol. No telling what is in that park.  I enjoy it.

They also rent boat, and kayaks in the park.

Money is just ink and paper, worthless until it switches hands, and worthless again until the next transaction. (me)

Daryk - Congrats to your son on his bowfin. You don't want to lip that fish! I wouldn't call them ugly.

Look at this gentleman in his nuptial finery! I would love to catch a breeding male like this guy!

Just had to go Cajun on us. Next you'll be showing us pictures of a gaspergou 😂! I'd rather see some sac-a-lait!

Yea, um, his looked nothing, nothing like that.  Lol. Black, and brown, with nubby spaced teeth, whiskers/barbells, and scales.  Looked prehistoric.

They are a fairly primitive fish.

This oysterfish may be an ugly fish if there is such a thing 😌.

In theory, all natural fish are pre-historic, BUT Bowfin are a primitive species that put the rough in roughfish. They take a licking and keep on ticking. Why evolve when you have a rock solid design?

they are often pretty beat up and battle scarred. The thought of them getting my fingers in their crushing maw is terrifying to me.  I take no chances with them.

a special fish that rarely bites artificial lures and they are tough to hook and land when they do. Occasionally in the past, we would find ourselves in an area that was thick with them and generally we would find someplace else to fish, but then I would go years without catching one.

I would love to catch some more of them
