Had a thoroughly mediocre day-trip on Saturday floating the Mermamec (the Bluffs to OOD). Fishing was really tough, but catching 5 spots - all about 9 inches - got my attention, as I probably haven't caught 5 spots combined in that stretch in the past 10 years.

ouch that's not good!!!!.....I have been swarmed by spotted bass recently......the last 4 mornings I have caught more BIG Spots than I have ever caught out of the Meramec but, MUCH further down stream. I have caught Spots around Sappington bridge and that sucked. The spots have a 2 or 3 week run where they go nuts and that time is right now IMO.

You can probably blame the tournament guys who weigh in their fish at places like Garrison's and then release them right there.  Some of them actually fish a lot farther down the river and then trailer their boat and fish back to the weigh-in, and they are bringing spotted bass from down on the lower river and "stocking" the upper river with them.  It drives me nuts, and should be entirely illegal.

I've seen the tourney guys with the weigh in at Hwy 30 all the way down at the Big River in the spring.  Lots of em too.  That's a pretty good haul.

It happens a lot during the Meramec Invitational. Several of us that fish it have asked why they don't just keep the spots separate and let people who want to eat them have at them. Somebody always keeps the dead ones so they don't go to waste so I don't see fresh fish going to waste.

This has been the year of a much higher % of the catch being spots in our section of the Meramec.  I mentioned it to Al early and he explained his theory mentioned above.  The trend has continued through out this fishing season.  In past years it seemed you would catch spots in certain areas but this year it is over over a much wider area.  Eating more fish tacos.

I fished your area down to Onondaga yesterday and caught 4 Spots and all 4 are dead now. Fishing was tough for the BIG fish I was there for but, caught many many 14 to 16 inch fish deep in the wood that related to moving water. That was my first time catching a Spot above Leasburg though, which was a BIG bummer.

I can only speak of the Invitational and I've been hit or miss for the past 10 or so years so I cannot speak for every tournament.  But I can tell you this, when cwc87 was helping run the weigh ins NOT ONE spotted bass brought to the scales was returned to the river.  I've always respected him for that.

Hell yes they would have to be dumb MOTHER F Er to turn them loose at the rafting company.... I honestly can’t believe they did??? Because I have never in my 50 years caught a Spot above the Huzzah.... until 10/01/2019

Starting wonder what’s going on here. I can’t believe the guys that fish the river Tourneys would be so ignorant and reckless
