Perfect example of the old adage about how it takes money to make money.  Sounds like he had a model figured out and worked it.  That's really the key to making it.  Figure something out and stay with it for the long haul.  Smart guy he was.

To a certain extent.  30 years on the assembly line won't net you the same as 30 as a professional will..

I was thinking more or less of the enterpeneur types.  30 years framing houses won't get you far either.  Unless you're the guy bidding the jobs, buying the material and running a few framing crews while swinging a hammer too. Same way with running over the road trucks or any of a nearly limitless world of opportunities for someone with ambition.  Drawing a paycheck will keep you beholden to the man.

Professions requiring an advanced education are another game altogether.

my neighbor across the street left for california when he was 18 and framed houses for 25 years, and retired 40 years ago.  People like him ruin the  pension system, but more power to him.

everything in this post is purely opinion and is said to annoy you.

He had something else going on to be able to retire at 53.  That or exceptionally low living requirements.

I hated not working but my Doctors told me to quit trying. I still go by places tell my wife I sure would like to work there.

Anymore I do stuff around and people tell me not to be doing it or they tell me not to try. I know they have my best interest at heart but it hurts to not let me at least try. Few years ago my Son got drawn for a Mountain Hunt. Knowing I knew the area he asked if I would go show him around and take care of camp. Even though Doctors told me not to I went.

We was scouting I was doing something, he says Dad should you be doing that? I asked him if he was going to narc on me? Well I messed up and got a Hernia.

I have a part time Job now and get involved in stuff I shouldn't and was told to supervise let the younger workers do it. Some times Office work needs to be done, no problem I'm there having fun doing my best.
