Could anyone offer any advice fishing this time of year?  Went out yesterday and got totally skunked. The sunset was beautiful though. I'm making an assumption that maybe there is just too much available food? The shad were incredibly thick!!!  It looked like an all you can eat buffet out there.

I always watched for Bass feeding on Shad, throw a small Spinner in and catch Bass about every cast.

Crappie are moving back shallow.

What fish species are you targeting?

Yeah, I was looking alot for the white bass to feed on the shad. They must have been full that day. 

Ketchup, I'm targeting crappie, large mouth, and white bass.

If it were me I would head straight for the backend shallows.  The bigger and wider the backend shallows are, the more fish are likely to be there.    Once there, kill the motor and just stand in the middle of the boat and look around for awhile.   Eventually you'll notice some kind of activity, a fish will break water, a school of baitfish will flush, or you'll notice that all the water birds are within a certain section.    When you perceive a clue.....go there and start fishing.   

If you get an idea in your head, like "I should try a spinnerbait".....do it immediately.   The sooner you work through the process of elimination the sooner you'll have a limit of keepers.

There are always some fish shallow. There are home fish and schooling fish. Home fish never move and schooling fish do what you read in how to fish for bass magazines. The fishing this last weekend has been pretty bad on most of the lakes that I’ve heard. Truman was on fire and went 👎 this weekend smithville was the same. East wind, clear skies, high pressure and moon up during the day recipe for horrible fishing.

The fish in the far backends are likely to be resident fish and are much easier to pattern than mainlake schooling fish, or releasee's that are swimming around completely lost.  

I don't know about you, but unless I stumble onto something out of pure luck, it takes me 3 consecutive days of fishing to put together any truly good mainlake structure pattern.  When pinched for time I always head straight for the big backend flats.  Fish live there until the water is near freezing, and the bass that live there are a acting like BASS, instead of like STRIPERS.

I'm not telling you that it's the best way to win a tournament....but I am saying that it's the quickest way to avoid a skunkin'.  😊
