The only thing that protects lumber is keeping it in the shade and sheltered from rain.  

I sealed all of my deck, except for the ramp leading up to it (because I ran out of sealer and wasn't sure if I wanted a ramp, or stairs).    I've had to replace 16-18 deck boards but haven't had to replace any of the ramp boards, I assume because they are at a slant and shed water quickly.   The only boards that are still in perfectly excellent condition after 15 years are the ones under the covered portion of the deck.  Personally I think that sealer is a waste of time and money.

Oil based stains and sealers are supposed to keep the wood from absorbing water, which they probably do, but then you just have dry-rot to contend with.    Either way the wood doesn't seem to last any longer than totally untreated wood.    

If you want it to last a long time, paint it.

Concrete patio.   The current one I have I’ve had to have it mud jacked twice in 17 years.

I'd get a sealant instead of stain or have these guys do it.

We built this using Treated Lumber. My wife says we shouldn’t have to do anything to it.

But I have Sealed it twice and where we walk it has came off making it look bad.

Got some building with Untreated Wood Siding should just Paint it.

After I built the house in '06 I had a giant pile of scrap lumber, some plain, some CCA, and some painted (because my daughter liked to paint and I'd give her stuff to paint on just to keep her busy and out of the way).   

After about 7 years I decided to burn the scrap pile, and the only scrap lumber that wasn't obviously rotting was the stuff she painted on.  I'm not sure what CCA is actually designed for, but it doesn't seem to last any longer out in the weather than plain untreated lumber.  I still use it for trailer bunks....but I have to question the reason why.
