tangledup Posted August 30, 2021 Posted August 30, 2021 My son's boy scout troop will be starting their fly fishing merit badge soon. One of the requirements is for the scouts to tie some of their very own flies. I only have enough equipment (vices, bobbins, etc) to have three scouts tying at a time. If anyone has old cheap vices they bought and then upgraded away from them to better equipment (as most of us tend to do) or other useful items, I would be interested in buying them. I don't want to spend a whole lot as most of it will probably be donated or tossed in a closet after the class, but I do need to expand my collection a little.
Gavin Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 Where are you located? Your local fly fishing club or shop would probably do a class for nothing.
tangledup Posted August 31, 2021 Author Posted August 31, 2021 Springfield. I don’t know anything about local clubs but I am going to swing by the fly shop this week and bend his ear a little. trythisonemv 1

I only know these clubs exist, and there is another, maybe, there was a (I think) Mid Mo Chapter of Trout Unlimited Southwest Missouri Fly Fishers Missouri Trout Fishermen's Association It might be worth a visit to BP, years back, one tying club event I saw had a stack of those cheap vises BP sells and I got the impression they had them as a promotion.

According to the requirements they have to tie two flies from this list: Dry fly, wet fly, nymph, streamer, bass bug, popper, saltwater fly. I was considering a wooly bugger because there are some very simple versions of it, still some fun techniques they get to learn such as palmering hackle, and then maybe a very simple nymph pattern that mainly consists of just wrapping thread or maybe a little dubbing. I haven’t completely decided yet. There are about 30 in the troop but I’m not sure yet how many are actually taking the class. Should find out this week.

Nick Adams Posted August 31, 2021 Posted August 31, 2021 I feel like MDC does something with that. Email Greg Collier Greg.Collier@mdc.mo.gov. He's an outdoor kills specialist and does archery training and hunter safety among other things. tangledup and BilletHead 2

Still going by today? If so I am going down to Springfield tomorrow. I will drop off a few bucks for your material purchase. tangledup, Daryk Campbell Sr, ness and 1 other 1 3 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!"
