Maverickpro201 Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 When do you plant your sweet onion seed?
Dutch Posted September 1, 2021 Posted September 1, 2021 Late winter or early in the spring. You have to be able to work the ground.
ness Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 Onions didn't make the cut in my garden. Tried them 2 or 3 times, from transplants, sets and seeds. The biggest were about the size of a golf ball or maybe a little bigger. Not worth it for me. John

So not worth the trouble of growing them ourselves. Potatoes are fun to dig and find them but also we never got great yield. ness 1

Yes, it's readily available and cheap, but there are some interesting varieties and the size of heads we got was decent. It's also kinda fun to have something going over the winter. Johnsfolly 1 John

I do agree about the variety possibilities being a reason to try to grow them. Ours just never got more that a few small cloves per head. We didn't have a great spot due to high shading in the afternoons and I wasn't really considering getting rid of the mature trees in our yard just for the garden. Also did have a decent selection of varieties at the farmer's market.
Quillback Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 I planted onions one time from sets, planted them in the spring and they came in well. I planted what was supposed to be some sort of super sweet variety but the onions I got were just plain old white onions, nothing special about them. If they had been really sweet like Vidalias I would plant them again, but as you all have noted, plain white onions are cheap at the store.
Dutch Posted September 2, 2021 Posted September 2, 2021 I always planted yellow from sets. A 40’ row gave 2 families all we could use during the winter. nomolites 1
