Brian K. Shaffer Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 Would anyone be up for a fun get together ? Day - From 10am to 2p -.those participating will be allowed to fish above the boat ramp only. Night - From 8pm to 12am - those participating will be allowed to fish above the boat ramp only. The only fly rod you can use what we all are using - an 8ft 5wt 2pc yellow Eagle Claw. snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 Freaking buggy whip if there ever was one😂
tjm Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 I guess I wouldn't buy a rod special for a one time four hour outing. I do have a 7'6" #7 W&M that I like a lot, but none like you propose.

A 6'6" 5wt. that was more like a 3wt. But weighed as much as a 9' 7wt.😂 Probably best suited for tiny little ditches with tiny little Brookies. I bought it with bluegill in mind..... but it didn't even have enough @$$ for that. The slightest breeze and you were screwed.
Root Admin Phil Lilley Posted January 12, 2022 Root Admin Posted January 12, 2022 I remember when you got that rod. Yeah, you’re probably partying by yourself. 🤣 fishinwrench and snagged in outlet 3 2

The slightest breeze and you were screwed. I have some old fiberglass that I got when dad died. I'd have to look and see what brand they are. Heck I probably have 20 high rods (at the time) and some still in the plastic. My dad was luckiest person you ever saw at charity auctions and stuff like that. Seriously, he had a reputation of always having the winning number in a raffle. Craziest thing you ever saw. But he always used an old Winston and my little brother got that one.
tjm Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 I'm not sure when Wright & McGill rods were first labeled "Eagle Claw" (the parent company) but think it was when production moved off shore, I do know that the old brown rods of the '70s are much different than the yellow ones of the '90s. I fish more with 'glass than graphite and have a few favorites but only one 5wt and that's a 6'6" Phillipson. I much prefer the 7wts for their versatility. Odd to me that people think of those noodle rods as "buggy whips", a buggy whip is stiff as rebar except the 12" lash. Typical Sage rods remind me more of a whip.
fishinwrench Posted January 12, 2022 Posted January 12, 2022 Fenwick made some really good fiberglass fly rod blanks. I might do a search later and see if they are still available. They were a joy to cast.
