MNtransplant Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 Question for you spinning reel junkies...i have a size 25 pflueger president that is nearly new..the first few trips that i took it out in colder weather i noticed it would start to feel a little sticky...still smooth but felt like the greased parts were just gumming up maybe...once i get it home and warmed up it goes back to fine...does anyone have a recommendation for a special gear grease that is good to colder temps? I've cleaned out the excess from the factory and regreased lightly with the lews spinning reel grease and same problem.. I've had several other pfluegers, especially the cheaper trions that have always been butter smooth with no maintenance needed but for some reason this size 25 president hasn't been as good. I know its just a $60 reel but wondering if i should try any other tricks before demoting it to a backup and replacing with a Shimano. Thanks! snagged in outlet 3 1
fishinwrench Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 Silicote reel lube (grease for the gears) , and 2-stroke engine oil on every other moving part. dtrs5kprs and MNtransplant 2
fishinwrench Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 Just FYI......That "Hot Sauce" Teflon based oil, that everyone says is the greatest thing ever, will keep the gears from retaining grease. It's known otherwise as Slick-50. Probably the worst thing you can do to brass gears, unless you can keep them immersed in it.... which you can't. dtrs5kprs 1

Thanks wrench, do you recommend breaking down the entire reel and cleaning the individual parts with a wd40 prior to applying this new grease?

I spread everything out and give all the components a blast with carb cleaner. Just don't get it on any painted surfaces. WD-40 probably won't dissolve and displace the old dirty grease and oil nearly as well.
snagged in outlet 3 Posted January 26, 2022 Posted January 26, 2022 Couple drops of marvel oil down the spindle and call it good.

No. I'm sure Marvel would be fine lube.....but getting the old dark crusties out first just seems like a better plan. I'm a professional for crying out loud !!! 😉 fshndoug and snagged in outlet 3 2
