Hi snkrohn, this is a known issue with Humminbirds of that era. I have a 998 with the same issue. The unit is 8 years old and it's been doing that for 7 of those years. Just never bothered to have it serviced. It comes on with no issues ... turning it off takes some finagling and sometimes sorcery/witchcraft. A flying scissor kick might work but that's not something I've ever been willing to try given my age limitations. Ironically, today I am taking that unit off for good and replacing both it and my 958 up front with new Lowrance units.

I swear my 998 has done that since day 1. The power button quit working on it recently as well so I have to disconnect power manually to turn it off. The sonar and everything still seem to work well though. Thankfully I found a good deal on a Helix 9 g2n mega si unit a few months back so I'm going to retire it or possibly move it to the trolling motor.

I have a 1199 with a sticky "Exit" switch.  Humminbird has no interest in servicing the unit.  I think that it's just a matter of cleaning (and maybe lubing) the switch but I can find no information on the "negatives"  of opening up the case.  Experience anyone?

Final thought.  Anyone have any experience with any organization that does out of warranty repair work on Humminbird gear?

Thanks, help would be appreciated.  Hate to toss out a perfectly good piece of equipment over a fifty cent switch.

Ran it by my friend Rickie on another site here is his suggestion,

I  think I have it fixed.  I sprayed some teflon based dry lube into a cup and applied it to the edges of the switch with a small brush.  I've probably punched the switch a couple hundred times now and it hasn't stuck once.  So far, so good.

Thanks again.
