jdmidwest Posted March 15, 2022 Author Posted March 15, 2022 Bullet shock does the knock down power. You can hit bone with a light fast bullet and achieve some knock down power. You can miss anything solid and it tear its way all the way thru and ripping organs and make a small hole. Its killed but does not know it. Deer are thin skinned. Light fast bullets do damage if they tear thru. But hit them with something that opens up fast and dumps all energy quick will shut them down. I hunted many years with a 6mm and 87 grain Boat Tail Hollow Point bullet at about 3100 fps. It opened fast and dumped energy fast. Most were recovered fragments in skin on other side. All would go a ways before dropping. Then the 30-06. Dumped them on the spot with 150 grain soft points. Slower and bigger. Thru holes both sides. 300 Blackout, 150 grain Boat Tail Hollow Points. Bigger and slower, 1900 fps, like the 30-30. One shot kills that go less than 30 yards, exit holes. 6.5 Grendel, 123 Grain Boat Tail bullets at 2500 Fps. Thru shots with little blood. Quartering shot thru brisket and bullet lodged in leg skin, almost intact. Bad performance, going to handload something better for it. Great accuracy and range. Does not dump any energy into target. 350 Legend, still open on kills, good accuracy and performance. Big Soft Point bullets that are running around 2200 FPS. Should open quick and dump energy quick. I have hopes. The 6mm was a laser. I could put it where I wanted. Shoulder shots broke them down and wasted meat. Head shots were a breeze. One was a hail mary with only a rear end shot on a trophy set of antlers. Up the butt, blew out a ham and spine. Severed a head at the neck with the 30-06 on a nice 8, all I had a clear shot at. Grandsons first buck was a spine shot with the .300 Black Out, bucked up and fell. Shot placement and fast open bullet that dumps energy in a short distance is good for whitetail.
