What do people think about torsion suspension on boat trailers?

I just got this older heavy duty boat trailer-- 19 foot, looks really sound--however the suspension system is torsion, not leaf or coil springs.  It seems to be ok during first tow of 150 miles, with no boat on it...Is there anything I should know or watch out for?  I plan to put a 15.5 foot aluminum boat on it, maybe my walleye boat at 17.5 foot.... Any info will be much appreciated.

Thanks

I have over 366k on a Toyota torsion system and it still works fine. Check for rusty components and replace if needed.  Torsion bars and springs wear out connecting points long before the bar or spring will break.

Thanks...I'll give it a real inspection today.

Torsion axles are simpler in mounting. Bolted right to the frame. They can ride a little smoother. Parts are more expensive and they're a lot more complicated to do any work to. Can't just bolt a in a new spring pack.

I think coil springs are more susceptible to sagging but that may or may not be true. Won't know what kind of shape they're in until you put a boat on it.

They have put torsion suspension on cars, trucks and army tank with success for about a hundred years, generally for a smoother ride as I recall the propaganda. I think Chrysler used it on the front ends of their cars from 1951 up into the '90s. I think most all horse trailers use torsion. Got no experience with boats, but I'd think unless one was obviously broken that you will like them.

Choose torsion for my jet, mostly because it gives me about 6 inches more ground clearance.  Noticed the difference in Ennis, MT with drift boat trailers parked side by side. I have been known to launch often at places other than ramps, so get clearance over stumps, rocks, logs etc.  The guys down at TI nicknamed me "stump jumper" as my champion trailer made more than one visit for repairs.
