I'm going to change Line on my Reels.

Because of Salt Water do I just want to wash the spools?

When a buddy and I fished in the area of the intercoastal waterway in Texas we just rinsed after each day's use with freshwater. Fly and spinning gear and never had a problem arise later. If your reel got dunked I would say take apart and give it a good cleaning.

Since I like to beach fish, I have had a lot of reels soaked with salt water. I just rinsed them off after each use and never had a problem with any of them. In the beginning I would pull the spools off my fly reels and clean the line too, but since I have stopped doing that I haven't had any problems.

When I lived near the salt, the recommendation was to rinse with fresh water after each use, but if if I was not going to put the reel back into the salt for weeks or months, I'd soak it overnight in a 5 gal bucket of fresh water then do the rinse. And yes for that I'd remove the line so as to get to all the reel surfaces. Generally the lines and reels don't seem to be hurt by ocean use, but, I've seen reels corrode if left with salt on them in long storage.

I'm a believer in a sink full of hot water and a couple of drops of dawn then a nice big reel dunk and swirl.  Rinse with the sprayer.  Shake the water off and then in a 200 degree oven for maybe a half hour or so.  Real Magic after.
