Brian K. Shaffer Posted January 22 Author Posted January 22 My pal Norbert shouldn't have to fear for his life for no reason while fly fishing below the dam. People were there - and they had to rescue this man from nearly going into the river. What if they were not there ? We all take risks. Just once I wish a trout would wink at me! ozarkflyfisher@gmail.com I'm the guy wearing the same Simms longbilled hat for 10 years now.
MOPanfisher Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Many years ago I can rember fishermen who got washed away. Seems like the water started up before the horn sounded. Below Truman you will notice the water rising before the horn sounds, but nobody wades there.

It’s nearly a death wish to try bank fishing on the North side unless young and stone cold sober.
tjm Posted January 23 Posted January 23 Not much point in the horn if your waders are already full when it goes off. Or if the bank is 20 yards farther away and the water just started rising, it should be a few minutes after horn before any change in discharge.

On the flood gate side halfway between the fence you are not allowed to go or fish beyond and the handicap pier there is a big flat that extends out. When no water running it is exposed. I started fishing there many moons ago. We would walk way out up to our waists across that flat until you began to feel bigger rocks. You stopped there. We threw big lead spoons or a 4 to 6 oz bank sinker with two bucktails above it. Water running you drifted in the current. Reel in and repeat. One fourth of July weekend we caught walleye, hybrids, blue cat and big crappie that way. Hammered them big time. Now they have sinkage for no wading or swimming. I was young and invincible back then. early 20s. I could run down those big rip rap rocks. Last time I went up to look around those rocks are polished smooth like glass from so much walking up and down to fish.
