Weekend Report

Spent the weekend down at Montauk. Original intention was to float the trout section of the Current, but for multiple reasons it didn't work out. So a wade fishing trip it was. Friday night, we waded and fished the blue ribbon section, and did reasonably well, catching and releasing some browns on little crankbaits and spinners. I already posted about that in the Current River forum, so on to Saturday. 

We ended up fishing in the park yesterday, which based on some not entirely positive experiences at Bennett recently, I'll admit wasn't my first choice and I was a little salty, but I got out voted and that's how it goes. And guess what? It was lovely. Yes, there were people, but I forgot just how much more room there was to spread out at Montauk. Limiting out was barely an inconvenience and took almost exactly an hour; the most interesting part was me losing my fillet knife, buying another at just a bit of an upgraded cost at the park store, and then promptly finding my knife right after. I love limiting out early because it allows me to hike around and take in the scenery, which is lovely at Montauk. Pictures to come if the uploader thing likes me today. Largely from hiking around after I got done fishing but managed to get at least one fish picture this time 😆

Bennett is for the city folks.  Montauk is more rural in crowds and park surroundings.  Good job.

I live in a tiny town not particularly near the city, but I am not blessed with proximity to trout streams, unfortunately.

Montauk has always been my preference when trout park fishing, but it's also 3 hours away instead of an hour. So Bennett/Niangua is really the only option for day trips for trout. It's Montauk/Current River/11 Pt when I have a couple days to camp and do it right.

Bennett/the Niangua is fine from about November-April but they're a mad house in late spring through early fall to the point of being outright unpleasant.

Shockingly, I've never fished there. It is about 2.5 hours from me, a little less than Montauk. I think its just it being a bit further than I'd prefer for a day trip, and when I've considered going there for a multi day trip, I've always ended up on the Current or Eleven Point because they're familiar to me, or on the White below Bull Shoals. 

I need to, though. Taneycomo and NFoW are the two major trout fisheries in Missouri I still need to get to.

We have a Taneyfest gathering in January.   Excellent time to meet OAF members and eat well.   Oh, and we fish also.
