I decided to replace the bushing and try the option of marking just to see if that was the problem.    Well,  I guess I learned why a shop is recommended to do the work.   I cracked the outer housing in 2 spots.

@fishinwrench,  I have a stripped bolt hole on the starter housing.   Would you recommend helicoil,  or re-tapping, or maybe something different?   Its the top zinc bolt in the picture that didn't belong in the first place.    I had to replace the starter and I suspect this may have been one of the reasons.

I'm guessing that you're referring to one of the 3 bolts that secure the MANUAL starter ?

I would suggest drilling & tapping to the next size up.  I think those are just 1/4-20 bolts...... Should be plenty of material there to allow a 5/16 bolt.

Correct.   It is the one that goes through the manual starter and threaded into the mechanical starter housing.   At least thats the best I can describe it.  I appreciate it.
