Foghorn Posted August 27 Posted August 27 The last time Susie and I went to Montauk, it was a pretty slow day. We had a shot at a couple decent browns thru the campground section but the size and numbers of fish weren't very good. Old college baseball buddy Jerry P. had called last week wanting to try the park again. Susie is still suffering from tennis elbow and bowed out so it was just the two of us. We hit the fly section around 09:45 yesterday and saw good numbers of fish in various lengths. Fishing was slow initially and we moved gradually downstream from our initial starting point below the "spring hole". As the day warmed up so did the fishing. Jerry started spanking them on a peach fur bug and I started hammering them on a black foam beetle. Neither of us caught any trophies but had a blast fishing 6'6" 3 weights. The water in the fly zone was in pretty good shape with several holes to deep to wade. All in all it was a nice day. Johnsfolly, dpitt, BilletHead and 6 others 9
jdmidwest Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Peach Fur Bugs and black foam beetles, I feel as I may have met you there and discussed flies. My fur bug has some of my buddy Rick's beard in it along with other things and a subtle orange thread. Black foam beetles were killer, and I use them on many trips. Have to have an orange dot on top for an indicator. I have stayed away from the MO. trout streams this year since the flood. And really, not fished much at all. That is changing this weekend I hope. snagged in outlet 3 1 "Life has become immeasurably better since I have been forced to stop taking it seriously." — Hunter S. Thompson
Foghorn Posted August 28 Author Posted August 28 Possibly so. The fish around Hudson's Corner were all over the beetle. BilletHead 1
WestCentralFisher Posted August 28 Posted August 28 Thanks for the report. We went back for the first time after the flood this summer expecting things to be slow, but there were plenty of fish and the park generally seemed about as nice as ever. You could see the after effects, of course, but mostly it's the same old place. It made me very happy to see. I've always said that Montauk, especially in the fly section and around the campground, is the only trout park that feels like a real honest to goodness trout stream, rather than a trout-based theme park. awhuber 1

I've fished quite a few of them, and you will 100% notice the effects, and it will probably bum you out. But the streams are still pretty as ever, and there seem to be plenty of trout around if you look. If anything, some of the streams that are usually more or less put and take offer a pretty fun challenge since fish aren't absolutely everywhere this summer. That was the case on the Niangua last week. Instead of them being stacked everywhere like many years, I really did have to read the water, and it felt like more "real" fishing to me than when they're just aimlessly wandering around even in the dead water that shouldn't really hold feeding trout.
