It wasn't really  much of an "attack".  1 of the 5000 bears in Arkansas smelled their hot dogs and checked it out.  They scared it away, it came back a few hours later, and they scared it away again.  It would be scary for the campers, but hardly an attack.  Now they have a cool story to tell.

Am I the only one who carries a gun in the wilds?

Missouri and Arkansas are free carry states, concealed or open.  Bears, dogs, crazy crack heads.  Carry a firearm.

I have never felt the need.  By and large I think I am the monster that other creatures should be worried about.  I am large, hairy and make horrific sounds both awake and asleep.  I tend to be tangled in a mass of treble hooks or winging them around dangerously.  Like a skunk I also have the ability to generate an incredibly fowl odor when frightened.

  Gosh,

Speaking of Arkansas I hope they don't get a taste for @Ham.

Agree completely...Won't leave home without it. That "completely random" attack by that nut on that couple while hiking at Devil's Den was the last straw for me.

Some nut case shot a farmer on a combine, dragged the body home, and killed a cop responding to a missing person this week just south of here.

If those fellers made 1 popping noise, I bet it would have left them alone.

From the fatality a couple of weeks ago:  AGFC said the exact cause of the attack cannot be definitively determined but the investigation revealed that the bear was found to be malnourished, which is considered to be “highly unusual” for this time of year when food sources are typically abundant. The bear’s stomach was full of natural foods, the necropsy revealed.

Microscopic abnormalities were found in the bear’s spinal cord and brain by diagnostic laboratories. This suggests the bear was suffering from underlying neurological issues, AGFC said.

“The combined evidence of malnutrition and neurological abnormalities suggests the bear was not functioning normally,” AGFC said. “However, the exact cause of these issues cannot be definitively determined.”

Most that attack are mentally challenged in some sort of way, animal or human...
