Quillback Posted March 9 Posted March 9 Planted asparagus a couple of years ago and this will be the first year I can harvest some. Got a couple of skinny shoots that have popped out of the ground in the last couple of days, not enough to harvest, but should I cut them or let them go hoping they will get bigger? dpitt 1
top_dollar Posted March 9 Posted March 9 If they are the size of a pencil or bigger you can go ahead and eat them. There will be several waves of shoots that come up later in the month and into April. If they are thinner than a pencil, you should probably wait another season, but even taking a few shoots probably wont kill the plant. Quillback 1
ness Posted March 9 Posted March 9 I would let the early, skinny ones go. With two years in the ground you should be getting some good ones soon. Asparagus is one of those things that makes spring exciting. I used to love having a little asparagus patch, but trees grew and there just wasn't the sunshine it needed. That's a problem with my whole yard, which is a bummer. Quillback 1 John

ness Posted March 10 Posted March 10 Man, if I could move my little garden to the front yard I'd be set. But, we've got rules around here. 😀 John

Let's see, over the years Pat has taken a deer out the bedroom window and a turkey out of what we call the family room window. From that same room I have taken two turkeys and one deer. The wise choices were that all were taken legally during the appropriate seasons. Note we put our time and miles by wandering the woods and fields. Lots of time actually for what we harvest. What we do is healthy for the mind, body and soul. The mindless trips to Walmart is not. I dread the day when that becomes the norm because of age which is knocking at the door. ness, nomolites and Quillback 3 "We have met the enemy and it is us", Pogo If you compete with your fellow anglers, you become their competitor, If you help them you become their friend" Lefty Kreh " Never display your knowledge, you only share it" Lefty Kreh "Eat more bass and there will be more room for walleye to grow!" Oh I have a Animal Rights person next door that don’t even like me killing Chickens. Not as bad as one I had. Would turn my Dogs lose every time I was gone. They got killed opening of Deer Season. I sued and won. I was loading up my last load to move. She came to the fence behind me. Hi neighbor. I said to myself do not turn around, jump the fence and kill her. I didn’t but at the time. oneshot rps 1
