  1. My father would have been 21 yrs old. I remember him telling a story about going out to bring in the cows wearing shirt sleeves and by the time he got back he was shivering and shaking so bad he couldn't talk. But not sure if it was related to that day or not. He may have been in the CCC at that time, almost 30 years too late to ask him.
  2. Let us know how you get ong with the worksharp. I am always looking for something else knife related to spend my $ on. Would be embarrassed to admit to how many knives, hatchet, Tomahawk, and axes I have. And still when I go out to field dress a deer I find the same ones on my belt. I took my old pair of Nikon 10x50s down to wife's stand today so she doesn't ha e to pack as much stuff the first trip of the season. Those old 10x50s are dang good in low light, but bug and heavy. my pair of Burris 8x32 aren't bad either. Way way back we used to look through the old Steiner binos and they were dang clear, but that was 30 years ago, "cheap" binos have come a long way since then. I only say cheap because I was comparing them to the Steiners. I am way too tight to ever pony up for steiner or Swarovski etc. Would some day like to get a Leupold Spotting scope but that tight thing I tough to get past. LOL says the guy who ordered 2 more knives in the last week!
  3. The sudden weather change reminded me of a story I read in Outdoor Life or one of those magazine when I was youngster. Title was The Day the Duck Hunters Died. https://sportingclassicsdaily.com/day-the-duck-hunters-died/
  4. I very seldom use a saw on a deer. Occasionally to split the pelvis but usually a couple whack with a hatchet. Legs get taken off at the last joint, cut tendons, twist crackle pop. May not work this year, I tried it on a deer the other day and something about that particular movement that my shoulder didn't like. Completely off topic, I ordered a new knife (I am a knife slut) from Midway on Sunday. Tracking it progress, it went to KC, then Ohio, then Maryland. They ain't gonna make anything off shipping this time! Actually I think it was free shipping, might get it before I have a deer to gut, depends on my wife.
  5. That's nice buck!
  6. Trust me I fully understand this part. Sometimes it's a pretty minor thing and I know it's gonna leave me hurting, but by dang I will do it if at all possible and then go seek the big chair.
  7. I have thought about the work sharp system. However I bought a set of the cardboard wheels way back in the early 90's from what was then called something like Razor Sharp Knige Service at BPS. I have sharped untold numbers of blades since them with them, regritting them several times (need to do again). And I am used to that system and am too lazy and cheap to change. I suspect that the Worksharp system is a bit easier to use as you don't have to free hand it. The Lansky system works well just takes more time.
  8. But on occasion they are somewhat entertaining.
  9. How long is his arm? Whatever it's still a whopper of a smallie.
  10. If the veterinarian served in the armed forces then Oneshot would have been correct-ish.
  11. There is an airgun thread? Well I should pay more attention!
  12. I fortunately outgrew my phase of bigger and badder was better. Now a hot .357 in my little Taurus revolver is more than I want. If it ain't fun I don't want to play anymore.
  13. At the risk of getting inundated, if a feller was wanting to get a good (not Olympic level) air rifle what should he be looking at. I doubt my old Gamo with scope is good enough.
  14. Done!

    What's Cooking?

Get an injector and mix up some "stuff" and shoot that breast full a few hours before roasting.
  16. I have done that as well but mostly I make a pass blowing inward the go back and blow them out. I have lots of yard, well two yards actually. Give the leaves at least two chops. But mower time is good time to me I don't mind making extra passes if it isn't too dusty. A little rain makes it nicer work.
  17. Oaks you only need to break them down to quarter sized pieces then wait a week or two. Suddenly you realize they are basically gone. If heavy leaves sometimes you have to rodeo the mower back and forth so you don't end up just bulldozing a pile in front of you.
  18. Buy a Pomeranian? Now that is asking too much of a feller.
  19. Mow/mulch them. Raise the de k as high as it will go and go over them a couple times. Don't wait for them all to fall hit it at least once a week. Also after you make the first mulching they don't stick as well and blow off easier in the wind.
  20. Tie the pom to a stick and use it to get dust bunnies from under the furniture. Option b tie it out in the woods and turn on a predator call, coyotes will come a running for it. Gotta be fast with the Shotgun though.
  21. I took most of five deer. minus the tenders and straps. To a local.processor. all boned out all they had to do was grind and squirter into plastic bags. Thunk I paid her $100 since I am a bit picky when boning out deer they didn't need to do anything but grind it. Would do it again in a heartbeat.
  22. That's a dandy buck for sure. And spot on with the directions for the heat. Cleaning all the fat and connective tissue out is key. S and P and sear in smoking hot skillet. Gotta be dang near raw in middle.
  23. Hell for $200 I might come over and skin and quarter it.
  24. I have left the house to go hunting with full intention of going to sleep in one if a few spots that were exposed to a nice warm sun and out of a cold wind. Nothing spoils a deer hunt faster than shooting a deer. My wife has a kill house I built for her but sleeping in it will leave you all stove up.
  25. Oh man does that loaf look like a bread bowl ready to be filled with some white chili!
